Well,

Yesterday my dad finally got to try his new 585AHR and after the first shot said "That wasn't bad at all!" He proceeded to punch some more holes in paper to everyone's satisfaction.

The 585 was a big hit at the range - for the size of the hole in the end as well as the great job Ed and Bitterroot of AHR did in its creation.

Now as to the subject line - the deposit is on it's way for our October 2009 Cape Buffalo and plains game hunt in Zimbabwe. It was a tough decision as to wheter to go to Tanzania for big buffalo but more limited plains game vs. smaller buf but wider variety of PG. In the end, variety won out (much as said by some in the "Redheads" thread on Walter's forum).

So, the AHR-built 600OK and 585AHR as well as (probably) a 300SAUM and 416WBY will be heading with us to Zim.

Thanks all for the advice.

Paul

Outstanding, Paul!

The worst part will be waiting for October 2009 to arrive.

Thanks George and Rich. It's far enough away that the pain of waiting is not yet too bad though we are very excited. I know that pain will get worse as we get closer to the safari date. Cape Buffalo BOOM is our main game of interest followed by thumb Kudu, Sable, Wildebeest and Waterbuck

Congratulations on taking the plunge…

I’ll be hunting Buff & PG in Zimbabwe mid August of 09 (my first time over)…

I sent my deposit back in February of this year…

My father will also be going as an observer though…

Planning and coordinating this hunt has been like a part time job on the side except its costing me money (still fun though)…

Please keep me up on date on your planning, especially with taking your 600 (I’m trying to think of a way to have some back up ammo over there just in case)…

Anyway we “600 OK†& “AHR†boys are going to need to represent well…

Matt V.

Booking the flight is on this week's "to do" list. I'd prefer to fly out of Newark since it is 15 minutes from home for me but I haven't flown out of there with firearms in the past. Was pretty straight-forward our of JFK when I last did so. Do you have a preference?

Took your advice, Rob on booking agent.

Stay well and looking forward to visiting you again.
Paul

Yeah - thinking about the same thing. I wonder if it is reasonable to ship cases, dies and a reloading press over, get bullets, primers and Somchem powder there and assemble it all on-site.

I wish you and your dad the finest hunt!
Just make sure you have paper work for your over .50 cal. rifles. The last thing you need is some wretched little puke not allow your over 50 rifles aboard.
I remember a post about it awhile back.

Wonder if we have time to supply you with a Super-NEF in 12GaFH 3.5". Ammo goes in a 12 ga Shotgun shell box and they would never question it. No over .50 paperwork to deal with and cases are properly headstamped. I have one coming in a week or too for testing but once thats done i could arrange to sell it to you with ammo. Probably talking $500 max and you supply the scope. Get your Dad to back you up on Buff and be the first to report on the damage. Many Many Bloody pictures required. Call Me Paul!-Rob

I like this idea…

Is there any reason why the bullets couldn’t be shipped along with the brass?

You would only need to ship the seating die, shell holder, and press for cartridge assembly (and something for weighing the powder charges)…

Too bad the Lee hand press doesn’t have a large enough thread diameter…

The only thing your outfitter would have to secure would be powder and primers…

Might be a feasible way to ensure that you have some ammo over there…

Paul,
Above is a facsimile of the ammo for a 12GaFH 3.5" like Rob is recommending.

Not a bad idea for you and your Pop to each take an NEF Ultra Slug with 3.5" chamber, a pair.

For backup, second shot, gunbearer hands you the second loaded Ultra Slug.

They should also pattern well enough for guinea foul, using 2.25 ounce turkey loads.

Versatile. Every bwana and his Pop should have a pair in camp. Wink

And I wish you and Pop the best, smooth sailing and no trouble with the guns and ammo.

It is illegal to handload in Botswana. Roll Eyes
Not so Zim and RSA.

Rob and Rip,
My father would say "Why shoot that - just throw it at the game and either it will die of fear or be knocked out from the momentum of the thing." shocker
Seriously, I really want to give the 600 OK a try on the Buffalo ever since I first ordered one from Ed Plummer when Rob and he first collaborated (after Rob's design and implementation experiments).
I plan on this being my "first" but not "only" safari so the 12GFH might still have me behind it in Africa someday. BOOM
Thanks,
paul
