I am in the beginning stages of planning an African Safari and plan to use my Winchester model 70 chambered in .458 LOTT for everything from Buffalo to Eland. I am interested in what the accurate reloading community has to say on the subject.

If you can shoot it, it will be more than just fine. http://forums.accuratereloadin...3411043/m/9531071602 Never had mine in Africa, here in the States I have thumped several feral pigs and now a white tail.

That's all I used last time over.

There's more than enough power there to take care of any critter in Africa. If the rifle fits you , you shoot it well and you are confident with it , go ahead , use it. Have fun.

My PH on the last elephant hunt has been using a Mauser 458 Lott since 1999 or so. His main tracker calls it "First Born" and will not go into the field unless he has it with him. He has shot countless elephants, cape buffalo etc. with it. I'd say you are good to go.

Agree with everyone here. If you can shoot it, it will do ---almost --- all. The .458 is not that flat shooting. Go with a .416 or .375 as a backup.

i took a lott to zim last summer. i had 500gr solids and softs for buff. i also took tsx 350gr for sable, zebra and baboon. it worked well. it was topped with a 1-4 trigicon with a green triangle.

As is posted here; if you can shoot it accurately, it would be just about perfect for anything. If I did not have a 45-/375 RUM almost completed, I would build a Lott.

Would the .450 Watts be an option? It is approximately .005 longer than the Lott and preceded the Lott by 22 years. In the Watts, one can fire it, the Lott, and the .458 Win. Mag. Watts headstamped brass was available a while ago. I believe I have the ballistics developed my Jim Watts in the late '40s with 400, 500, and 600 grain bullets. Barnes made the bullets in two jacket thicknesses: .049 and (perhaps) .030. I used my .458 Lott (actually had the Watts chamber, but the .005-inch difference in case length is inconsequential) with 500-grain bullets at 2250 fps for everything from Impala to Cape Buffalo, at ranges from 30 yards to 315 yards. If you can shoot it well, use it. One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know. - Groucho Marx

L&R, apparently you have a 458 Lott in your possession so are familiar with it's recoil. Yep, if you are comfortable with it then take it. Someone mentioned that it was not a long range caliber but with 350 grain bullets it will reach out there. You just need to know where the points of impact are with the varies bullet weights. Only the buff will require a 500 grain bullet.

I've never used anything other than a 500 grain bullet with my Lott. I don't like different bullet weights with the same rife. Softs and solids, fine, but different weights and it gets complicated. Too complicated for my simple brain. Another opportunity for Murphy to inject himself.
