Second to last round jams Login/Join

I have a CZ550 in 375 H&H that has been giving me some trouble as of late. The second to last round, when I work the bolt quickly, doesn’t get picked up and the bolt ends up sliding across the top of it then jamming the round into the top right of the receiver (versus down the throat like it’s supposed to).

Any you guys seen this and, more importantly, how do I fix it?!

So, are you saying it used to feed fast and now it is giving trouble? Also, is it feeding OK slow? Have you tried different ammo? Need to know how many rounds mag holds and to which side does it stack. IE. does the first round go right or left?

I can fit 6, but it’s rated for 5, which is what I put in.

First round in goes to the right, second round (one that jams) is on the left.

Jam occurs across multiple brands of ammo.

Don’t recall this occurring before. Recently put the rifle in a new stock (McMillan) and noticed the problem with that, however, hadn’t shot the rifle much since my last Safari 7 years ago so unsure if it’s the stock or just something I hadn’t noticed. Have an elephant hunt in two months, so slightly panicked as it’s not something I want occurring on the eve of a DG hunt.

Put it back in the other stock and see how it feeds.

You won't use it as the main rifle for the elephant hunt, will you?

Yes I will, had a 416 once ... more than I was comfortable shooting. PH knows, not concerned.

Rifles going to a smith on Monday to having the feeding fixed.

That's the problem many people think just because they can fit extra rounds into the mag. it is ok.

They are not designed to do so.

It changes the geometry of the way the rounds sit in the mag.

You might have to replace the mag. spring.

The problem of too many belted cartridges in a stagger box magazine !

When you overstuff the magazine the cartridges ride and contact on the belts only so that a single cartridge can either tilt up ( which is what one wants them to do ) or tilt down leading to a jam. The 375 H&H with its long taper and belt is quite prone to this. 3 down usually no issue its when the stack goes to 5 or 6 when this really becomes a issue

Part of the problem is the inherent way the magazine spring configuration is set up !

Normally and by design the spring is seated like a M lying on its side with the legs of the M facing forward.

This configuration when compressed has the follower plate exerting maximum pressure on the back part of the follower and very little on the front. The follower itself then can and tends to tilt down in stead of up which adds to and causes the problem

I have found that putting in a stiffer magazine spring helps and making sure the follower sides and magazine box are buffed smooth so as to eliminate any binding helps. Above all dont try and overstuff the magazine even if it allows 6 down !

Get a custom spring from Brownells is one probable cure, load 4 down and one up is a practicle cure..4 down and one up is all one needs anyway, if it ain't over by then find a tree.

Thanks guys. Yes, if I need more than 4, probably doing something wrong.

Rather than fiddle with this and that, it's getting sent out Monday to a professional to be diagnosed and fixed properly. I know it will come back perfect.

You made the correct decision to have a professional adjust your rifle prior to a DG hunt. My guess is a simple fix for him by adjusting the rails. Best of luck on your Ele hunt.

If the rifle was rated for 5 rds but you can load 6 it suggests to me that there may be a mag box to receiver gap that is deepening the mag well. Also could screw up feeding. When you change stocks you have to make sure the mag box is oriented properly to the receiver.

I've got an old .375 BRNO 602 that holds 6 rds and hasn't had one feeding issue yet.

The OP needs a reputable DGR 'smith, like Wayne at AHR, to take a long look at it. It could be something simple, such as a weak mag spring, or something more complex that requires in-depth surgery to remedy.

Either way, the rifle needs someone looking it over who knows what they're doing.

No first-timers, part-timers, or shade-tree gunsmiths, like Cabela's employs. I wouldn't trust those idjits to tweak a Daisy BB rifle. Roll Eyes
