Hello lapua,
I purchased a new one of these rifles some couple weeks ago and couple items I noted were that the front sight blade/bead is a bit on the thin side for me and will replace it with one from I believe NECG firm. They are pop in pop out types and not a big problem. Trigger on mine is quite heavy and measured over 4.5 lbs. ( I shoot match rifles long range and have a set of weights for certification of trigger pull) but that should not be a big problem to correct with a little careful honing, etc. Looks quite simple. Third item is the safety lever itself which is way too small for me and may well remove and mfg. a larger one?????
Overall, the rifle is built like an Abrams tank, good heft, 10.5 lbs., bit heavy on the muzzle, but I prefer that, stock is well finished, sharp checkering ( I mean SHARP) blueing is very well done, and as for shooting, factory stuff puts them easily into 1" group at 100 yards. Will reload and determine best possible load for the rifle, but don't believe you will have any problem with accuracy. Ruger does take some time with this rifle and were determined to produce one which would stand the heavy useage it is expected to see and it is indeed strong in all respects. It is in reality an American designed, mfg., magnum length "mauser" action w/ the square bridge feature and they provide the rings. There is a source for levers for the Ruger rings and if I can remember where I found them, will probably replace the bolt arrangement on the rings. Rifle is good for several lifetimes I would judge.

Hello Lapua,
Will do, anything for the friends "down under." You guys are sticking with us totally in the war on terror and that will not be forgotten by Americans. Our independence day is approaching, July 4th, and trust me, many of us are aware of who our friends are and who is not our friends.

PS I have walked across that very solid looking stone bridge in Sydney a few times. Of course it was a bit of a chore for I had consumed some of your excellent beers!!

I have the same rifle as you in .458 Lott. I got it for a Buff hunt in Africa. It shoots amazingly well for such a large heavy recoiling rifle. My 500gr Barnes TSX and my 500gr Barnes Banded solids leave the barrle at 2990 fps and shoot about 3/4 to 1 inch at 100 and they impact the exact same spot at 50 and 100 yards. The only improvment mine needs is triger work.

I used to live in Brisbane in 93-94 I met my wife there when I was on deployment there with a Marine Amphib battle group in 89. Now we live in Mesa, Arizona. The Australian's I worked with where great! Love the lott of them. Gun laws and hunting was a little to restrictive as well as expensive for me.

Yes it should read 2290 fps. That thing probably would have killed me if it had made 2990. Thanks for the correction!!

Yessir: I recently got one myself. First I had the bolt jeweled,
then a Kick-eze psf installed, then a Timney Trigger put on and adjusted to 2.75 pounds, and finally had it glass bedded as the screwy iron thingamajig that Ruger uses in the forearm was loose and the cross bolts didn't really support anything seemingly just for show. Now it shoots like a tack driver and I'm happy with it...oh, and I put a Leupold 1.75-6 on it with Warne detachable mounts. Blessings with yours.

Ah, the days of Fosters and Four X in Viet Nam. We would take mail out to the Australian Cruiser Melbourne (I think that is correct) off the coast, sending the mailbag down on the rescue hoist, and it would come back up with a couple of cases of brew. Of course, we'd have to split it with the Aussie advisors (Alfie Gee and Snowy), but that was a fair trade.

Hey Lapua
I should have added that the standard recoil pad is really poor. Definatly buy a Pacmyer Decelarator. It made shooting the Lott 500% more enjoyable!

Dustoffer! Are you still flying? I am the Director of Maintenace for a Power/Utility here in Phoenix. We have 3 rotorwing and one fixed wing. I crew our Bell 212 on construction jobs.

The standard pad on these is terrible. I put a decelerator pad on mine and its pleasant to shoot. Also, put a timney trigger in it, and its the best trigger I have ever used. QD rings, and its set to go.

It was the first bigger bore I have shot, very nicely made rifle, thumb but I would buy one of those new Vero Vellini Euro style (brass buckles/hardware) 'Safari Slings' to take the sting out of carring that thing. Wink

I pulled my Lott apart to bed it this week. Do any of you know what the purpous in the cross bolt is? I concur with Gila Jorge it looks mostly for show. The hole in the stock in not even a close tollorance fit to the bolt. Nor dose it contact the face of the recoil lug.

I will let you all know how the bedding job gose.

458LottFan: Yessir to say the least I was shocked when the gunsmith called this fact to my attention and showed me. For damn sure glass bed this rascal or risk ruining the nice stock.
The iron sights that came on it are allright, but they could have left the ramp off and put on NECG like Winchester used and I would have been pleased....bet it would help the balaince as well. To be even more pleased a 26 inch barrel would have been preferred or even a 24 rather than this dumb 22 incher. Just a few stray thoughts. I understand the Alaskan boys like hot pokers for up close work on bears in the willows but I wanted a classic rifle.

Hello Again Lapua,
If you read your manual for the Ruger, it clearly states that you are not, repeat not, to alter in any form the stock on the rifle, no adding of compound, removal of wood, etc. No, the "Ruger Police" will not get you if you do so, but do not expect any consideration of any sort, as in warranty, in the event something should occur, break, accuracy go to hell, etc.
The owner's manual gives very clear instructions as to how to "take apart, put back together..." so doing that would not be a violation of the rules, but would strongly advise trusting the somewhat extensive engineering abilities of Sturm Ruger & Co.
It is each owner's money and can do as they wish, but these things are not exactly free and plan on keeping mine just as they made the thing.

Lapua,
I have one I bought used fron a friend that said it was too heavy. I love it. It shoots close to 1/2 inch with 270gr hornady's and Barnes TS bullets. Killed a buff, puku and hyena with it in Zambia last lear. I'm 5'7'' and weight 140lb. I like the extra weight and it didn't bother me carring it for seven days in 90* heat. You will like it
