TonyRumoreWhat's the name of an '06 length 458-404 Jeffery?
I'm sure someone here knows what cartridge is based on the 404 Jeffery case, shortened to 30'06 length and necked to 458 caliber?
Like a 33 Nosler necked up to 458?
Or a RUM case shortened and necked to 458.

TonyRumoreSounds good. Where can I get dies and a chamber reamer?
Tony

jeffeossoMc Gowen barrels has my reamer - and you can order dies from ch4d --
note: it'll likely be a moment before custom dies will ship

TonyRumoreYeah, like 2 years from CH4D.......

p dog shooterI know wild cats interest people but for the trouble.
I just go with a 416 Ruger.
I know it is not a 458.
I don't think that any critter well know the dif.

chuck375Or get a CZ 550 or Model 70 in 375 H&H and have it converted to 470 Capstick?

jeffeossoIt's a great round -- frankly, beats the lott in velz, and been proven on at least 5 continents -
If it were me, today, and I needed a rifle, I'd get a 458 winmag, load it with h335 for best vels, and go hunt.
the 458 accrel still my first choice for hunting with a big bore .. but with the world being topsysturvey -- well, heck, the winmag doesn't have any flies on it

Hey Tony,
Jeffe’s 458 AccRel is a great cartridge. I borrowed his reamer and barreled an action back in 2010. However, you asked about a 2.5” 458/404 Jeffery. That was originally a 450 Vincent Short Magnum. Here is a link to ballistics for the cartridge on this site:

wildmansix458 African also is in this category.

eezridrWhat Jeff said about the 458 Win mag. With H335 or with A2230.
I have pushed Swift 500's and Hornady solid 500 grs to 2200 fps (A 2230) with no signs of pressure in my Browning Safari grade. They are shorter than monos and work good in my rifle.
I throttled back to 2160 just as most say it is sufficient.
It is additionally very accurate.
I really like that rifle. A production rifle that swings about like a good bird gun.
I really like 450 swifts at about 2300 in that gun.

willmckeeThe cartridge described was once known as the 450 G&A short. Jack Lott designed it as a way to ramp up velocities a bit in a standard length action and the only change from a 458winmag was rechambering. bolt face was already correct and the rails worked. at least in the model 70 that Guns & Ammo magazine wrote about in the first one. Lott wanted this as it gave an improvement in 458 ballistics without the need of a long action as was required by the 460G&A.
I think that was in G&A, maybe around 1975 or 1976.

willmckeeand was of course based on a shortened basic .404 case.

ledvm.458 Win Mag, AA2230, some 450g Swift A-Frames (or 420 gr CEB Raptors) and some 450 gr CEB solids…good to go. I just stop at 2250 fps cause it is easy to reach and good enough.

congomikeI think the original was the 460 G&A Short. It was the 460 G&A trimmed to fit in 06 length actions.

AtkinsonThe first one I recall that matches your question are the 450 Guns and Ammo a short version of the 460 Guns and Ammo...commonly known as the 450 G&A (short) and the 460 G&A on a full length case, both fine DG rounds that beat the 458 win at the time..Since that time there have been a number of like wildcats..Posting mostly from memory..

chuck375I'm sure someone will correct me, but I thought the 404 Jeffery would fit in a standard length (not magnum) Mauser action?

yes and no - the 30-06 length is 3.35 OAL
while a 404 has been shoe horned into it (making the action's mag and feeding longer) it's longer than 3.35

reverse that order, as the nosler (compare drawings) came out after I was shooting the AccRels .. 5 to 6 years after

AtkinsonChuck,
You are correct up to a point, the 404 has been been successfully built in Winchesters, Mausers, and probably any std length rifle action??...
That said its a blivit (5 pounds of poop in a 2 lb. bag)..I much preferred my 404s built on Enfield actions, just enough more room to make feeding etc. easier to accomplish...
Just off hand, If I were in need of a std action 404 these days, I would build a 404 on the 375 Ruger case. in a Ruger 77 or perhaps a pre 64 mod 70. but keep in mind the available 416 Ruger would be almost a duplication as far as balistics go..

A standard length action can be successfully "opened up" to accommodate the 404 Jeffery but it is not just a drop in exercise. There is a difference of just over 1/4" in overall cartridge length between the 404 and say a 7mm Rem Mag cartridge when loaded with 400gr solids and 160gr plastic points respectively as factory loadings.
A standard length action, Mauser at least, can also be open up for the even longer 416 Rigby cartridge, I haven't seen one but it must require some fairly radical work on the action to achieve this.
I have a standard length Oberndorf Mauser Sporter opened up for the 404 Jeffery and that's a tight fit, love to see what is done to fit a 416 Rigby.

mike petersonis it the .450 Howell your thinking of?
12 October 2021, 22:11
AtkinsonIve seen a couple of 416 Rigbys on 98 Mauser actions and one in a mod 70 pre 64. Ive seen 404s on the same action...The 404 case is very close to the 416 Rigby case in powder capacity and the 416 Rigby is the 404 case with a belt for all practical purposes....that said all my 404s have been built on magnum size Mausers or modified Enfields which is my preference.. A PH I know has used a WR std 98 in 416 Rigby for years with no failures...Most gunsmiths have trouble making std actions feed, most won't admit that..
