Tanooserecoil comparison?
i was shooting a h&r single shot 10 gauge the other day 24 ' barrel with 3 1/2 in slugs 766 grains at estimated 1300 fps i was wondering what caliber rifle the recoil might compare to. the shotgun weight was at around 9 pounds .

600 OverkillIt's pretty close to my 600JDJ practice load of an 800gr cast lead bullet around 1400fps

JudgeGIf used the calculator correctly, with your shotgun, guessing about 50 grains of propellent, the recoil energy is 43 foot pounds with a recoil velocity of 18 fps.
A .458 Win Mag with a 500 grain bullet at 2150 fps and gun of 8.5# with 74 grains of powder is 68 foot pounds with a recoil velocity of 23 fps.
Same rife, a factory .375 H&H 300 grain load at 2500 fps is about 43 foot pounds and a recoil velocity of 18 fps.
So.... your slug recoils much less than a .458 but about like the average .375 H&H.
Of course, the stock fit, drop, quality of recoil pad, etc. will effect your perception of recoil.
All that said, the worse recoil I've experienced is not Saeed's .577 T-Rex, but a H&R 10 gauge, shooting Federal factory 3 1/2 inch slugs in a plastic stocked 5.5 # gun. Not only did my shoulder turn blue, I broke my little finger of my left hand on the fore end sling swivel. I never sold that gun, but I don't know where it is or even care. 73 foot pounds at 28 fps. I'd rather stand in front of a train.

Ouch! I've never broken anything but did have an epic bruise shooting my 500 Jeff from the bench without a pad or lead sled. I'm still waiting for my Rem XCR II in 375 Weatherby to come back from the gunsmith. Had a probelm with the first chamber reamer. At 7 3/8 lbs with scope it might be a bit stiff. As a 375 H&H the recoil was pretty mild.

My H & R 10 does not seem to kick that bad. Mine is the 36 inch barrel though, probably heavier. I put the recoil about like a 30-06 or 300 mag. Definately not like a .458 or .470.

Bill/OregonJudge: I have suffered cruel abuse at the hands of a lightweight H&R too. Never again.

I will never try to shoot my 505 Gibbs from the bench, with a lead sled or anything.
