I'm wanting to run some of the 750 A-Max bullets out of my 500 AS, has anyone had any luck with this? What is a good starting load for this bullet? Thanks for the help.

I'll just watch on this one, since I have a 500 AccRel Nyati.

What energy level do you want?
What is your magazine length and COAL limitation?
Are you aiming for the usable capacity or a reduced load?

Hi Rocky,

Can you tell us more of your motives and goals
for this load, intended velocity, intended
distance to impact, game beast or target, maker
of the rifle,...? Just curious.
Best regards, wave

Just want to launch the big bullets. I have a good stash of M33 ball bullets as well to play with. I would think 2100-2200 wouldn't be out of the question with the 750's. The problem I will run into is my barrel is 22". Recoil is not a big factor, as I have a Pacnor brake. Hornady 570 DGX at 2250 are fun to shoot. the intended targets will be rocks in the Palo Dura Canyon and the occasional Texas hog.

Just to let ya'll know what I've got,it's a CZ 550 Mag with a 22" Pacnor barrel and brake. Right now it has a Nikon 1-4 BDC scope in quick detach rings. My thinking is to have another scope in a second set of QD rings for a moderate range load. Hornady's Ballistic Calculator shows fairly impressive ballistics just running the 750's at 2150. that holds more than 5000 fpe at 500 yds.

Try 50 grns of 5744 to start and move up slowly. These are fun shooting loads. -Rob

Rockymoundarms,
Twist of 1:10" by McGowen has worked for me since
about 1998 with my first 500 A2 being a Ruger No. 1
with 27" barrel,
and my second one being a BRNO (CZ forerunner) with 23" barrel,
was of same make and twist.
I have used 1:10" McGowen and 1:9" twist PAC-NOR barrels for the 500 Mbogo with 25"
and 23" barrel lengths respectively.
I used 1:12" twist PAC-NOR 24"-long barrels on two rifles
of 12.7x68 Magnum/49-10 chambering.
Those were so good that I used 1:12" twist McGowen barrels on the
500 Bateleur rifles of 24" and 25.5" barrel lengths.

The original 500 A-Square rifles were also great, all the rest
were just for fun.
Those 500 A2s produced excellent accuracy,
sub-0.2" for 3 shots at 100 yards with a 705-grain AAA Harlow,
and I could put most of the 750-grain Hornady A-Max bullets
into the size of a cow patty at 942 yards in a cow pasture,
from a sit with a tall bipod.
The black-tipped milsurp projectile of about 700 grains
seems to be more accurate than the similar weight plain ball.
Stock up on whatever projectiles of 647 to 750 grains
that you can lay in, and have a lot of fun.
They all work well.

For any of the 647 to 750-grainers, try starting with
H4895, RL-15, Varget, RL-17, and H4350 somewhere between
95 and 100 grains, and work up to 105 to 110 grains,
depending on bullet and powder,
with usual safe practices/precautions.
I'll be doing the same for 500 Bateleur and 500 Mbogo,
which have case capacities smaller and larger, respectively,
than the 500 A2.
Good for kicks.

Thanks to all for the info. RIP, I'm going to start with 90 grs of H4895 with the 750 A-Max. Shouldn't have any problems with reduced H4895 loads.

The weather warmed up enough to do a little shooting yesterday. Wound up getting the 750 A-MAX up to 2094 fps with 97 grains of H4895. The brake I have now didn't handle the loads as well as I thought it would off the bench. Recoil was stiff off the bench. I'm going to try a JP Enterprise brake before I give up on the idea of the dual purpose 500.

The JP Enterprise brake did little to tame the 500's recoil off the bench. I guess the idea of the dual purpose 500 A-Square is officially over. Just too much recoil to make it worth rigging up a second scope and rings. Back to the 570's.
