I'm going to rechamber my 375 rugar#1 to one of these calibers, any advise?I think i can get a 300gr out of the 375ultra @2800-2850fps and 2950-3050fps out of the 378wby.I want a long range moose elk rifle and like something alittle different, the h&h are to common.Which of these calibers would be best?Recoil isn't a deciding factor,I've had many big bores. Thanks

As I recall, the Ruger only has a 24" barrel? IMHO, you won't get the full potential of either round unless you use a 26-28" barrel, and with the falling block action, the longer tubes aren't ungainly. Since you're looking for something different, and using a single shot, I'd suggest starting with a rimmed case, as they extract much better from the single shot actions.

As far as recoil not being a problem, there have been many thoughtful discussions that suggest that the recoil level of the super mags is such that while on paper they offer enhanced balisits, people simply can't shoot them in the field accurately enough to take advantage of that, due to the recoil.

In a #1, I'd try loading the 325 or 350 gr X bullet in the 416 Rigby, will make a dandy longe range moose gun.

I agree with Paul, with the slow powders that are required to get top performance with these rounds. A 24 inch barrel is not the best choice for either of these two cartridges especially the 378 Wby.

Griz,
Like others have said, neither are good ideas in a 24 inch barrel.

What you should do it rebarrel with a Douglas,Shielen,or any high quality barrel.Do a 378 with a 30 inch barrel (OAL of the rifle will be the same as a bolt gun with a 26 inch barrel). You'll get 270 grain bullets up to about 3300 FPS out of that long of barrel. It will shoot REALLY flat-flatter than a 30/378 loaded with 165s.

It will also come close to kicking the holy schmitt out of you.YOU WILL NEED A MUZZEL BRAKE to do any kind of accurate long range shooting with it.In a 10 pound rifle, recoil would be out of this world-probibly around 80 pounds at around 24 FPS.

Whoever said rimmed cartridges work better in the #1 are WRONG.While single shots such as the Martini and various earlier Contenders work much better with rimmed cartridges, the Browning and Ruger single shots work great with rimless, belted and rimmed cartridges.

Hello.
Why dont go down to 338, and look at the Lapua, or RUM. Loaded with some 250 grs Noslers you'll get a heavy hitter here too. And accurate as h....! But again; 24" is to short for these ones to.
(You'll get one h... of a flash though!) [Wink]

I'm considering a 375 RUM myself, but as a regular bolt-action.

I have a model 70 winchester that I had rechambered to 375 ultra,it has a 24" bbl. I think this is a truley awesome caliber! I get 2850fps out of a 300 grain north fork bullet. It shoots 2" groups at 200yds. It does have a bit of recoil, but I am a recoil junkie so I guess it does not bother me. I have not taken any game with this rifle yet,but I am confident it will do the job. I dont think you can go wrong with your rechamber.

diesel_dude,

Did your Model 70 need any alterations or work to make it feed the 375 Ultra or was it OK.
