What would the recoil of a 30-378 Weatherby Mag with a 200grain bullet loaded at full pressure be like in an 8 pound rifle?Because I just had a rifle made at this weight and it has no brake! What can I expect when I pull the trigger.

Me thinks a hellacious sound, simultaniously followed by a very quick and sharp jab

I'd personally rather shoot a 375 or 416, and have something that has killing power on par with its recoil.

In a word Brutal---I shoot the Accumark and do not use the break. I have removed the VMV 3-12 because of the eye relief (it cut me twice not bad enough for stitches). This rifle is very accurate and for the most part has been replaced by the AAI in 338 but when I have to carry a long-range rifle in the mountains for example the AAI is just to heavy. The only other real drawback is the muzzle blast, which is considerable to say the least.

Make sur you have a scope with adequate eye-relief! You will need it! Buy a good recoil Pad as you will also need it! I think you will notice the recoil as it will be sharp and fast. The worst combination. Consider having a brake installed ASAP.-Rob

My son's 300 RUM weighs in at 9 1/2 lbs. It is the loudest rifle we have and the recoil of 200 Noslers at 3100 fps is fierce! It's recoil seems heavier AND faster than my 340 Wby or the 338 RUM. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

A nice rifle that you can reach out and touch something with just hate the recoil reminds me of my larger rifles.

The .30 378 on game does not impress me. We have had two clients use them and while capaple shots it was very loud and did not flatten the animals like you thought it would. Recoil was on the side of horrible and eye relief on a telescope is premium

Demon,

I haven't had the chance to shoot one, but one of our Safari Club Chapter members has one his wife gifted him before a sheep hunt. They took it to Namibia for a plains game hunt recently; I say they because the two of them both use the rifle.

Lynne is a new shooter, and it seems that she has not heard of the recoil as being a problem.

Michael's story of the Namibia hunt is in the January edition of the Chapter's news letter, Trophy Times. You can find it at:

http://www.sandiegosci.org

Click on the pdf for January, and go to page 20 ("Return to Erinde").

OWWW!

If you don't mind me asking, why only an 8lb gun in such a vicious kicker?

I'm one of those sick individuals that actually likes shooting heavy kicking rifles (there are a lot of us here, this forum is kinda like "group therapy"), but I can say that shooting an 8lb 30-378 with 200gr bullets would be a far cry from "fun".

I am not a big fan of muzzle breaks (that rifle will be loud enough already!), so I'd make sure that I had a really good recoil pad on it.

Have fun, and let us know how you like it!
