With a fired case, you can get a die made to exactly fit your gun. CH4D or RCBS can do it is you mail them the case.

Quote: Buggering the chamber on one of the very few original 500 Jeffreys, surely you jest? I was very displeased with the quality of the 500 Jeffrey dies I recieved from CH4D. For $150, one would think that the seating die would be bored for .510" bullets, but for some reason my expanding ball gauge and micrometer read .505". I elected to lap the die out myself, thinking that if they couldn't get the dies right the first time, I might end up with a .515" opening when I got them back. I would certainly recomend getting two sets of dies, or at least two sizing dies. I'm not sure who to recomend as to the supplier, or an economical route other then having proper sizign die reamers cut, and then the dies make from blanks.

Alf, Having read the monograph on the 500 Jeffery, I know from whence you come. Redding has the best avenue for custom dies. Go to: Http://www.redding-reloading.com Select "Online Catalog." Then select "Custom Made Dies." You cannot beat Redding quality.

Alf, My understanding is that RCBS no longer makes custom dies. Sometime ago I had an interest in doing a 30/416, 338/416, 375/416 Rigby and 450 Rigby. CH quoted about $140US as I remember. Redding were also about $140US for the 30, 338 and 375/416 dies but $400US for the 450 Rigby. The impression I gained was that the 450 Rigby was so expensive because they were not set up for the case body whereas the 30, 338 and 375/416 were to be a 416 necked down with no changes. There are some advanatges in taking the Weatherby route as I have done I have seen a few CH dies in Australia and by the look of them I can imagine how Paul will have had difficulty with them. I believe Hornady is also making custom dies. You might also lie to try posting on www.longrangehunting.com as some of those blokes are up to all sorts of weird things with dies and case forming and including fiddling about with the 500 Jeffery case. Mike, RCBS certainyl does make custom dies, as I have spoken with them int eh matter no more than 4 weeks ago. In fact, this is a critical line of business to them, and is listed on their website http://www.rcbs.com/default.asp?menu=1&s1=4&s2=8&s3=74 jeffe
