Whats a new RSM action and stock worth?

dirklawyerWhats a new RSM action and stock worth?
I'm Lt. handed and I'm thinking of getting a 375 in the RSM using the barrel and selling the stock and the action. I have a Lt. handed GMA for the project.

GeorgeSIf the Ruger barrel has an extractor cut like the Model 70, wouldn't it be on the wrong side for use with a left-hand action?

dirklawyerGeorge,
My understanding is that you cut the threads back a little and rechamber. Dirk

jeffeossoThe barrel shank is MUCH larger than the std ruger... the stock, depending on the wood, up to 300, the action, 400 to 600, i would guess.

GeorgeSJeffe,
You've worked on Rugers; is there no extracter cut on a Ruger barrel?

RIPIIRC, there is no extractor cut on an RSM barrel's threaded shank.
If you re-use the integral-quarter-ribbed Ruger barrel on another action, you will have to cut off the threads, then mill/turn the breech end of the quarter rib down to cylindrical shank and rethread the stub, leaving the rest of the quarter rib intact.
The recoil lug of the action is a drop-in plate that cantilevers from a nub/bolster on the action. That will now be of little use, and a Remington-style washer lug will have to be fabricated to rebuild the action to be used with a new barrel, or reuse the recoil plate, an idea which I do not really care for.
I'll start the bidding for the action remnants and stock: $300
Gonna take a lot of smithing to build two different rifles from one RSM.

x2mosgSeems to me it would make more since to buy a barrel, have a quarter rib (NECG) and a good set of sights (NECG) added and go kill stuff. Robbing a RSM is a lot of going around the world to get across the street IMO. The aggravation of having to turn around and sell the action and stock would make any extra expense, if any, a wash for me. I suspect though, with the machine required for your proposal, that the cost either way would be a wash.
However, if you change your mind and end up going with a 416 Rigby, I'll take the action off your hands. I'd love to have one to build a 450 Rigby on. That way it'd match my 416 RSM.

gumboot458Dirk , I agree with x2 , , seems it would be easier to have the GMA action barreled to your specs ... If you really wanted something snazzzzzy , have a 1.5" blank custom contoured with all the jewelry on it . ie , 2nd recoil lug , rear sight base or Quarter rib . . sling eye and front sight base ...ect ...
.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

jeffeossoyou guys are forgetting that a barrel to match the rsm is a MINIMUM of $1800 and probably 6 months wait... though a custom barrel doesn't HAVE to weigh what the RSM does
so, if he got a 375 for
1500
-400 for the action (from jeffe, because he's cool)
-300 for the stock (if it's good wood, not from jeffe)
He's in the barrel for
800
and can have it "friday" and is facing EXACTLY the same gunsmithing challenges that installing a custom barrel has, in terms of timing, threading, chambering...
Heh... Dirk, want to buy a ruger RSM .375 barrel and stock for $1000?

dirklawyerJeff, your calculations are what I came up with and whats behind my reasoning to look at this option.
I could use the barrel but don't need the stock.
