I bought one of the 375 Rugers in the Alaskan. For me this is one great rifle! I really like the feel of the stock and how short the barrel is! The weight of this rifle is just right and it points great! I had a 375H&H Ruger Express and hated how much it weighed (11.5lbs)! It was a pain in the butt to drag it all over the tundra for Caribou. The 270gr factory ammo chronographed at 2700fps. Exactly what I was getting from the 270gr from the 375H&H express. I am going to shoot some handloads this evening. I will be satisfied if I get the 270gr TSX at 2700fps. We are headed up for Moose this year and I am anxious to see how it performs!

Everyone who's shot one sure seems to love them. I can't see trading in my H&H but I'd dearly love a .423 bore on that case.

Exactly what I would expect in the 20" barrel of the Alaskan. The 23" barreled African gave me a 2782.1 fps average for 10 shots.

Should be a great moose cartridge. The .375 Ruger is going like gangbusters. thumb

Hello

I have tried several reloads with the 270gr TSX and RL15 and IMR4350. The 4350 out of the 20" barrel only yielded 2550fps which was very disappointing. The RL15 with 74grs produced 2700fps which to me is acceptable but a far cry from the Hornaday advertised velocity of 2850 with a 20" barrel! And by the way, the RL15 and the TSX shot 7/8" groups at 100yds! Tonight I will try the H414 powder which I believe Hornaday is loading the factory 270's with.

I believe Hornady's claim is for their factory loads and not necessarily what one can achieve handloading.

I already chrono'ed the 270gr factory and only got 2700fps with the 20" barrel. Still perfectly acceptable but still shy of the advertised claims.

You are right on track. Actually a little ahead. The 2840fps with the 270gr is from a 24", Hornady says 2670fps with the 20" bbl.
It's all right here:
http://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=627

Your actually 30fps ahead of the game with your 20" vs. the Hornady numbers.

The accuracy doesn't surprise me- I have shot 3 shot groups with the factory 300 grain softs that were .678 and .823. I'll take that anytime.
I assume you were banging 270 gr TSX, not 180's as your post said?

Thanks Len

Your right it was the 270gr TSX!

Thanks syd-jai!

I have not seen that page on the Hornaday website! It does cast a better light on this cartridge! I still like the gun and the 20" barrel!!
Hell, the moose and bear won't know the difference 100fps!

Those are great numbers out of a 20" barrel. I think that's fantastic!
