A-Square Question
Art Alphin states with A2 rifles one should NOT push the extractor

over a chambered round as it will sooner or later BREAK the extractor.

Why is this so with P14 and M17 based A2 rifles? I've never heard of

such an issue with controlled feed actions built by others? Are the

changes that Alphin Made to the P14 and M17 actions that he used in

his rifles sound? I own two A2 rifles both on M17 actions I think,

one a .416 Rem Mag and the other a .416 Rigby. I am considering using

one of those rifles as the basis for my project of the .495" [or so]

diameter bullet fired from 500 A2 brass wildcat. What do you guys think?

Some one posted pictures of P14 and M17 bolts to show the extra metal

on the P14 so as to make it clear why one should use the P14 when building

a 505 Gibbs rifle. Where is that thread, and might anyone want to take

even more pics and post them showing the differences from 4 or 5 angles?

Jack, there is no such thing as a P17. The Brits had a P 14. The US had the Model 1917 or also called M 17.

Absolutely true with any Mauser style CRF action.

Absolutely correct. You will eventually break an extractor when forcing a snap- over on any. CRF action.-Rob

I am at an interesting juncture now, for within the last week I
spoke to a rifle maker who is quite respected and who said the
extractor is made of spring steel and if the mechanism is made
a certain way the snapping over will NOT be an issue at all. So
men, lets hear your arguments.

I'd find a new riflemaker! All Mauser extractors are made of "spring steel" Ask him exactly what "spring steel" he uses.-Rob

Rob,

You say above MAUSER, but earlier said ANY CRF. I just

want to be clear. Do you mean MAUSER, Pre 64 Win, M17,

P14 ... or ONLY MAUSER?

The marker of the rifle if you mean Art you better look more into his backround before you consider him respected

Rob is right (as usual), any fixed rotating claw extractor will eventually break. The Ruger 77MkI would snap over, but it was not a CRF action. The Sako 85 is called CRF, and will still snap over, but it only partially controls the round as it exits the magazine. It is best to push the rounds into the magazine lest you be looking for an extractor at an impromptu time.

His work quality is unquestioned as clearly superior, [his delivery time is trashed by many though]

this is from SATTERLEE'S web site:

http://www.satterleearms.com/intermediate.htm

Titanium Intermediate Length Action

Total weight 1-lb & 12-oz. As a plus for the hunter, this action also
features single-round loading capabilities, which allow a single cartridge
to be placed
directly in the chamber and the bolt closed with ease.

It will feed anyway, anywhere, anytime. Each action and barreled action is built by one
person - me - Stuart Satterlee.

It says the same thing on the AFRICAN action page, Magnum Mauser page and small ring page.
