I wish someone would make affordable 2 bore and 4 bore metallic cartridge rifles I would get one !!

CR500 I reckon it would be a laugh to have a 2 bore sitting in the safe (were it would spend all of it's time after the first shot [Wink] )

I would try and shoot roo's with it under the spotlight [Big Grin]

Ok, so a Ruger no. 1 can be re-barelled to xyz caliber - great!

Without having made the actual comparison myself; the falling block of a 222 mechanism should be a bit smaller than the one on of a 458 Lott, right? Assuming this, there should be different action sizes of the Ruger no. 1. I guess a 222 can't be simply rebarreled to a 577 T-Rex(?).

Also, there is the "fore-stock" factor. The forestock (or whatever the piece of wood that a right-handed guy/gal holds the gun with using his/her left hand with) has to be a different size depending on if the action is a 222 or a 458(?). The space that the 222 barrel requires of the "fore-stock" is a whole lot different than that of the 458 Lott barrel.

There has to be a minimum caliber (action) for which you can start to re-barrel to the "big boys"? Is it 375H&H and up, or is it 416 Rigby and up, or what?

I'd really appreciate your help on these last questions.

A P.H. friend of mine, Ernst Scholz of Tanzania Game Trackers, had a 500 Jeffrey #2 built on a Ruger #1. The work was done by Clyde Moore of D&D Gunsmiths, Clawson, Michigan ( 248 585 0134 ). I handled the rifle and it was top shelf in every regard. Clyde did some test load shooting of it.

Bear in mind that Ernst shoots a Harris Talon rifle in .460 Weatherby Mag like most of us shoot a 300 Win Mag.

My understanding is that there is just one size of Ruger No. 1. There might be minor differences in the clearance cut in the top of the falling block to allow passage of the cartridge. It seems to me that with the largest cartridge adaptations the safety also becomes an annoying obstruction.

The only thing you run into with the #1 action is the bbl hangar, with the Tropical model it is already big enough to accept a larger bbl.THe gunsmith that did my 577 saud it was easier on his to start with the Tropical model because of the bbl hangar. There was extensive modification to the fall ing blaco and feed ramp,he got mine to where it kicks the emptys right out over my arm.
