A cheekpiece in reality is just so much decoration and/or nostalgia, albeit I like a nice egg shaped cheekpiece on a British type bolt rifle along with some castoff, never cast in on any rifle... I dislike cheek pieces on double rifles however for no particular reason...

It depends on what your body is shaped like, and whether or not you will be using a scope, and how low you can get the scope mounted. If you are only going to use iron sights you can set your stock up just as you described. The difficulty comes when you wish to use a scope. Then you need to maintain the level of your aiming eye further above the level of your shoulder. It is much easier to accomodate both iron and scope usage on the same rifle with a forward sloping cheekpiece such as you find on the Sako rifles. The Hogback design of some European rifles also does a decent job. If you set up a stock without a cheekpiece for irons, then when you try to use a scope you will have to give up most of your cheek weld. If you set up a stock for scope use, and then try to use irons, you will have to scrunch your face down on the stock. The recoil will then beat the crap out of your face. Pay your money, make your choices. JCN
