Just a question what you personally feel is hunting range for your big bore rifle. I know that Dangerous game is usually taken at close range, but I'm thinking Plains or NA game. I think I might do a shot at a black bear out to 200yards but would try to keep it closer myself.

I'm pretty confident that I can make a killing shot at 200 yards with my 404 Nitro Express. (400 grain Woodleigh @2400 fps). I get about eight inches of drop at that range. I can't imagine shooting anything at farther than that. Fortunately, my PH in Namibia says he never lets anyone shoot further than 150 yards.

I found the 416rigby good out to about 200yd. But i dont recomend it or any calibre. I regard long shots as sniping not hunting. Jhon

With my 416 Rem Mag, I've shot at the range out to 275 yards. When just a inch or so low at 220 yards, it was like 10" low at 275!! This was with 350 gr. Speer's @ 2540 fps. I got a huge lesson in gravity! I think I'll try to keep shots to 225 yards on game like moose, and bears....I can get within 100 yards easy. Plus, my 3X scope doesn't really help much on the long shots. Maybe a 300 yard shot could be done on moose with a 300 gr. X @ 2900 fps, but I've yet to try these.

The deer I shot last year was 70 yards, moose was 130 yards +/-.

I limit myself to 300 yards, but I suspect I could connect at 400 with a rest and everything was right and the target wasn't a Duiker...that would be with a scoped 416 or 404...Using a 300 ro 350 gr. bullet would probably make it easier, but I'm not going to shoot at 400 I don't think.

With iron sights I would say 250 yards limit...150 yards with my double rifle. yards are with a decent rest of some sort..

Off hand?? about 100 to 125 yards with a double or bolt gun...

Duh- A big bore should be limited to 100-150 yrds max.Lets face it, most of us sight them in at 50 yrds. For a Buff or Ele, 50 yrds is long range anyway!. If you want to shoot plains game sight in at 200 yrds with a 300 wby or equivalent. Most folks can't hit squat first time past 300 yrds even with a scoped 300 win or wby anyway! I recently ran some tests with 10 seasoned hunters using everything from a 30-06 to a 30-378. The target was a 18X18 orange square, 10 degrees uphill at exactly 365 yrds. No one was told the distance. The wind varied from 0 to 10 MPH ( crosswind). Only one hunter hit the target first shot, that was with a 300 win mag rem 700 with a shepard P1 scope. Distances were judged by these guys as from 250- 450 yrds. Most guys shot over the target! Just the facts!-Rob
