Dang it this is still pondering in me.I saw a set of 416 ultra mag dies.I have the 26" Sako in 416 rem mag with a 26" barrel.I would probally put a muzzle break maybe a Weathery and a fiberglass stock. Its either this or build a stainless Winchester Model 70 into a 416 Rem mag or a 416 Ultra mag.I just think with a 26" barrel the 416 Ultra mag would work pretty good.I think with a break on the bench it would not be bad to shoout out of a 26" barrel.

Sounds like a pretty sweet deal. IMHO I'd stick with the Sako, and your idea with a break is probably going to save you from getting your fillings replaced! What are the specs on a 416 Ultra Mag? I'm to assume this is going to be based on the .375 Remington Ultra mag? "Molotov Cocktails don't leave fingerprints" -Dr. Ski

Its just the 375 ultra mag necked up.I am almost leaning towards using a stainless Winchester 70.Then the scope rings wont be blown off at each shot. There are other scope rings for the sako but none I trust.

dgr416 Sounds intersting I have thought of the same thing. I have 416 rem in a mod 70 Safari express. Do you have any data on the balistics of the 416 RUM. How much work woud it take to geit feeding? Thanks Dr B

The trick is to find a box and follower for a Model 70 originally chambered in 300 Ultra Mag. Some say they are no longer offered as parts from Winchester/Browning but that's where I got mine. With those two parts, my Model 70 will feed the 416 Dakota, which is essentially a longer necked 416 RUM. I can make brass for it by running 375 RUM brass through 416 Dakota dies. That's my next project, I have the action sorted out, just need some minor things like a barrel, stock, etc... "There always seems to be a big market for making the clear, complex."

The gunsmith who I talked to about this project said with a 26" barrel would shoot the 350 gr bullets around 2750 fps and the 400 gr bullets around 2550 fps.He uses the Weatherby max boxes for the Ultra Mags.He is making up another rifle for me to check it out.I keep thinking about a Stainless Winchester instead of the Sako because of Control Round Feed and being stainless.I could just have the Sako rechambered though.I just dont trust the Remington 416 stainless in the 700 remington.I have had too many magazines springs give up the ghost.I will check into it further.I do worry that remington will stop making the 375 RUM brass though.

I zeroed my 416 Rem. at 150 yds shooting 400 gr bullets. Then I thought I would shoot to 200 yds to see where the bullets drops to. I shot twice. The rounds were to the right about 2" at the same height as my target. They didn't drop at all. Can't figure why they didn't drop. The bullets were going 2408 FPS

I shot my 416 at 200 yard quite a bit.I had it dead on at 100 yrard and it droped about 4" at 200 with my reduced loads. That load is a 350 gr mag tip at 2400 fps .I shot the 400 gr bullets sited in at 100 yards 3" high and mine were about dead on at 200 yards. The 410 gr woodleigh bullets droped the most when sited 3" high at 100 .They were about 2" low at 200 yards.
