Cartridges of the world calls it an essentially new design but shares charteristics with two earlier cartridges, the .284 win. and 9.3x64mm Brenneke. The book shows a diagram with the base diameter being exactly between those two cases at .500" verses the above .496 and .504, respectively and with a shallow 15 degree shoulder. However, this must have been a prelimenary design as a diagram put out by Hornady, the cartridge maker/loader, shows it to have the same base diameter as the 9.3x64mm Brenneke, just a shortened version so to speak and a 17.5 degree shoulder like the '06. Jeff Cooper probably wanted the shallow shoulder for slick feeding but I suspect Hornady overuled with the bit steeper shoulder to insure good headspaceing as it probably fed extremely well with that. OAL is around 3.075 inches. Case lenglth of 2.362 inches according to Hornady. Loaded by Hornady with a 270 grain spire-point inter-lock at 2,560 ft/sec.(rated for heavy or dangerous game) and a 225 grain spire-point inter-lock, a reduced load, also at 2,560 ft/sec. The latter must be an effort to make this cartridge more useful for just deer hunting. The 270 grain inter-lock though is not that reliable for shoulder shots on stuff like eland and buff according to past experience on eland with one of our posters.

The parent case is the 9.3X64, shortened to 60 mm and opened up to take .375" bullets (or 9.5 mm if you will).

John Schaefer has a lot of background on his Steyr Scout website.

The cartridge design work was done in Europe by the way. Hornady's bullets are OK for most North American work, but you need a harder 300 grain bullet for Africa (and a solid too). I am looking to use North Fork bullets for my next hunt over there.

Try some Failsafe 270 grain bullets in your 376 Steyr. Those are working well in mine.
