I was at the range yesterday and saw my first 458 win mag. I asked the man if he hunted with it or was it a toy. I was in awe of the size of the barrell, I think it was biger than my varmint special. During sieze fire he actually asked me if I would like to try it. I had a choice of 400 or 500 grain bullets. I chose the 400. It had a big muzzle brake and good recoil pad. FRom the sand bag it was not as bad as I thought but still a good shove. The biggest rifle I own is a Remington classic in 300 weatherby. Shooting such a gun made my whole day!! Razzer

I admit it would be nice to have one. I told him I would settle for a 375. He bought it for a toy and just likes big guns. He admitted he has a better than average salary and has money to use on things like this. As I told him I have been trying to go on a black bear hunt but haven't even done that yet. I do get quite a bit of deer and hog hunting in the fall. My teaching job lets me have Thanksgiving and about two weeks off for Christmas so I can't complain.

Get yourself that .375H&H...or the .375Ruger, shoot cast bullets made for the .38-55, and have a ball. Those 260gr and up cast bullets also make gooooood hog medicine!

The best way to shoot a big bore for the first time is off-hand. That way you can move with the recoil.

That must be why I traded my last 338 win for a 458 win.. I killed deer with this rifle 16 or 17 years ago........Still as pretty as the last time I used it .. A delux Interarms Alaskan with a 1.5-4.5 x20 scope......And a slick barrel.....It is the first slick barrel large rifle I had ever used....... If I can find any , all I,m going to shoot in it are the old 510 gr winchester loads with the big lead nose on them.....Take it out on the nice sunny days... Smiler

You should find a 45-70 Govt. -- but then I'm biased.
