I can't wait!!!Smiler

"I came into the office this morning to find my e-mail full of 505 Gibbs
questions. I'll try and address them all at once with this note.

This is not an official press release, however it is just to let you know
what is going on.

We are in the R&D phase with the 505 Gibbs. I hope to begin testing the
prototypes in June. As we are still early in the process, I do not expect
to have these available for sale until early-mid 2005. A waiting list will
be available for dealers at the time that the new caliber is officially
announced.

As far as non-US sales go, I do not know if they will offer the new
chambering or not. Contact the local division of CZ or the CZ distributor
for your area for questions on distribution outside of the US.

I appreciate the suggestions that some have sent on different calibers and
stock designs. Almost all of the changes in our lines are due to these
types of comments.

The basic platform will be the same action as the the rest of the 550 Safari
Magnum line. The first production will probably be in the new American
style stocks.

I spoke to Jason shortly after reading this, and he is a very personable person. I called to mention to him that Mr. Burgess had given information on potential feeding problems and the solution to them. He was receptive and asked that I send him the information, which I will this evening. He isn't just a salesman from what I got, seems that he works with the gunsmiths on this and has first hand knowledge of all the obstacles they have hit thus far.

I wish all firearms companies had somebody like this working for them. I for one am really excited about this!

PS
He recognized my name from the e-mail that I had sent him, he reads them all, and chose to reply like he did to hit us all at once. Thought that everyone that sent an e-mail would like to know he went through them.

What do ya want to bet it's a MRC PH action?

MRC reports 104 ordered out of 140 required to start the run!

It looks like MRC did not take our suggestions regarding:

1. Bolt release (needs to be mauser style)

or

2. Height of square bridges (need to be higher)

500,

I would actually be happy if they used the MRC action as it would save me the trouble of replacing the CZ safety with either a 3 position Winchester type or Mauser flag type safety.

Have you heard the rumors of SIG/Mauser importing a "budget grade" version of their current high dollar bolt action offerings? This came direct from a sig rep I know. Rumor has it they will come in at around $2K and most likely be made available in the current calibres (incuding .500 Jeffery).

Best,

Well, other than the possibility that the bolt body has a larger diameter for the Truly Nervous, I can't imagine why they wouldn't just go with the tried-and-true (and economical!) 550. I mean, MRC actions aren't what you could call "given away" and if CZ-USA is trying to break into the "workingman's DGR" catagory with a .505 caliber, that sure wouldn't be MY way to go.

From what I understood from my conversation they are using their existing action, making the necessary changes for Gibbs.

OldSarge,

What is wrong with the bolt diameter of the ZKK/CZ550?

I thought the Gibbs was a truly huge round. Will the regular 550 bolt open up enough for it?

That's the same email message I got when I just got home. Let's see what pans out. At least Jason is willing to give you some feedback even though it seems like a canned response.

Don G,

if you look at the other thread here on big bores you will see the explanation of what has to be done to the bolt, but it will work.

Nitro,
I think the bolt diameter on the ZKK is just fine, but then, as an uncivilized American, I carry my rifles with the bolt in the rifle. Is some "advanced" countries such appalling behavior is illegal; when one is traveling public highways or in commercial vehicles, the bolt must be removed. Under circumstances as described there is just the faintest possibility that the bolt might get dropped on the bolt face and if opened up enough for the .505 rim the bolt face could be bent. Such a thing keeps the Truly Nervous awake at nights with a case of the cold sweats. Me? I sleep like a log!
