I don't shoot 500gr in my rifle, but my mind load is 405gr Remington with 40.0gr 3031 for around 1250 fps. My wild load uses Ranger Rick's 720gr cast at around 1700 fps..can't remember the powder charge off hand...seems like it was AA powder. Rifle is a Ruger #1 with a 24" barrel. My friends custom CZ looses about 100fps or so with a 22" tube. wk

Hornady 500gr SP factory loads averaged 2298fps for 5 shots from a 23" Winchester M70 barrel, .458Win rechamber.

My fastest reloads are upper 2200s/lower 2300s. The Lott delivers as advertized.

Hornady factory loads clocked in at 2208 FPS from my Ruger RSM. The RSM has a 23†barrel and the reading was taken ten feet from the muzzle.

You'll see 2250fps with a 24 inch tube and lose about 50 fps for each inch less. Best powders seem to be ball powders ww748 and ww760-Rob

My Lott is a Parker Hale .458 WM which I had re-chambered to Lott specs. I got up to 2350fps with the 500gr Hornady using Varget but decided that dropping back to @2,250fps would save wear and tear on my shoulder. Smiler

I get 2,300 fps plus a bit out of a 24 inch barreled AHR-made semi-custom rifle using Vihta Vuori N540 and 500 grain Woodleighs.

With the Hornady factory 458 Lott ammo I get 2,202 fps out of a 22" barrel and 2,267 out of a 25" barreled rifle. The best i could get out of the Hornady factory 458 Win ammo advertised as going 2,260 was 2,133 out of a 24 inch barrel.

With the 458 Win or Lott I have gotten a very consistent 20 to 25 fps/inch difference in barrel length.

It also depends on the bullet. The Hornady solids got higher velocities than the Speer AGS solids for the same amount of IMR4320.

I could get 2300 fps/22" with the AGS & IMR 4320 but the powder was crammed in there.

Like mrlexma and Norbert, VVN540 is probably the best powder but I haven't tried it yet.

For a Hornady 4504 bullet in Hornady brass, 83 gr. IMR 4320 lit off with a Fed. 215 primer I get 2238 Fps. in a Ruger RSM (23 in. barrel). Keeping everything the same except with the newer (Brass colored) bullets I get 2247 Fps. for both soft and solid.

With Hornady Fact. ammo I get 2268 Fps.

I can tell you that a 500 gr cast bullet with 50 grains of AA 5744 behind it will go 1850 fps out of a 25 inch barrel of a CZ 550. The recoil is very mild but the load still packs a lot of punch.

Does anyone know what barrel length Hornady used to advertise the Lott at 2300 fps

I myself was hoping to achieve 2300 FPS with a ruger M77 RSM with a 23" barrel with the barnes 500 gr solid. Barnes data shows 81.0 grains of IMR4320 to achieve 2349 FPS with that bullet.

Barnes velocity data is BS, at least for non-Barnes bullets. I don't use Barnes bullets so don't know what their speed might be.
