I think I have my first problem with a leupold [Frown]

When I do my warne mounts up tight (just firm not screwed right up) I can not turn the variable power ring, I can only turn it if I have the mount screws on the top of the warne rear ring almost loose. Obviously when left loose the scope slips back.

Well folks do you think it's busted ???

Sounds like the rings and/or mounts are out of alignment causing a bind or the rear ring is too close/touching the power selector? [Big Grin]
Good luck

It more likely that your mounts are not aligned due to either improper mounting, bad rings/bases, or the screw holes in the receiver not being lined up.

Was this a new-in-box Leupold, one you bought used, or one you've had on other rifles?

No folks it is a 2-7x33 Vari X 11. It was previously on a .416 Rigby with no dramas. I have the adress thanks Jeffo.

George it's on a cz 550 so there is no mount screws involved.

tsturm, it is a tight fit on the magnum action cz's with the 2-7x leupold but it worked fine on my cz .416 Rigby. This is a cz .375.

So, should I send the scope back ?? what else do people suggest ??

Jim, I wish... [Big Grin]

Regards PC.

Check the scope body for straightness. If either end wobbles, your scope tube is bent. If I remember correctly, Leupold will place your lenses into a new tube for $80.

If the scope body is straight, then your ringmounts are torqueing the scope when tightened.
Are CZ ringmounts swappable, or is one designated as 'front' and the other 'rear'?

Have you spoken to CZ-USA?

PC,
You might try new rings. My CZ 416 was fine with factory rings but with my CZ 375 I had to go with Warne rings to get on paper with the elevation [Mad] Strange stuff and drove me crazy for a bit until I got the right combo. Good luck.

George,

ineteresting thing I found today, I have this scope in warne QD's, I have a spare set of Warnes kicking around and they do the same thing to this scope. I then placed it into the spare CZ 550 mounts I have kicking around and the problem did not occur [Confused]

I am thinking of sending the scope back to leupold anyway, could it be that the way the warne mounts tighten up (from the sides rather than top to bottom) is causing the problem.

I definitely want to stick to the warne QD's I will have to wait & see what leupold say. I will wait until after the new year to send it back.

To be quite honest I am thinking that maybe a variable is no good on a .375 either and I would be better served with a 2.5x compact on my .375 ??

Ring alignment tool from Brownell's will display ring alignment. Lapping tool from Sinclair (or perhaps something more serious, if it's a more serious misalignment) will fix it. Sounds like both Warne mounts ON YOUR CZ are misaligned, and the CZ mounts ON YOUR CZ aren't.

For my lighter stuff I got Davidson bases and Jewell live-center rings, but they're expensive, aren't available for CZ 550 Mag, and may not be as solid as the CZ mount. Lapping is surely the way to go. Maybe you'd rather have a gunsmith do it for you, if you know a good one.

PC,

I use a 1" diameter steel rod to check ring alignment; follow Recono's suggestion, and get yourself the lapping kit and/or alignment tool.

Also, try turning the Warne rings 180 degrees and see if that takes care of the torqueing.

I did have those rings down there for lapping, but never followed through. I will definitely have both sets of those warne rings lapped now after the new year.

I think I will still send the scope back to leupold just to be sure I did not crush anything.

500 grains I know what your saying, the 2-7 was on my .416 rigby and it gave no drama's there.

Thanks for your help folks, I will get it done by a smith as I am mechanically retarded.... [Wink]
