Do you really want a "cheap bullet" or an in-expensive one?

As far a jacketed 500 grainer I'd look to Hornady

They feed in my #1 just fine! Wink

In all seriousness, I never thought much of the Speer 400FN until I got a couple of boxes from a guy who quit the 458 life.

I weigh my bullets before reloading, and the spread was from 399-401gr, which is pretty good quality control IMHO. They shot accurately also. I've heard they are soft and I don't push them beyond 1800 FPS or so (if I'm hunting with them)

Right now, SR4759. 35gr in my #1 will get around 1500 fps, an I feel you could get another 100-150 fps with conservative experimentation.

coffee

If you can find some 405gr Rems, they are a great bullet for most anything in NA at an MV up to about 2200 fps. They are accurate in my CZ 550 458WM at around 2400 fps. Because of the Lott-length mag, I seat them out to the bottom cannelure, and use RL-7 to send them on their way. They are much cheaper and a much tougher bullet than the 400gr Speer. BOOM

I run those 405 remys out of my 458ar at around 2200 and they absolutely blow up like frigg'n bombs. I have shot two deer with them and didn't get more than 6" of penetration. The first one I took head on and it blew one of the front shoulders completely off!! No shit! Keep them under 1800 if you want any meat. Its the one hanging on the left.

Roll EyesNow that's strange (as in odd)! I must have a different lot of bullets! I've flattened a couple black bear with 'em from my Marlin at near 2100 fps and the exits were 3/4"! And I know they're a LOT harder than the 400 Speer. The same pressure in a vise that flattened the Speer barely dented the Rems. Confused

WinkI'm beginning to think that maybe you're talking about Remington's LATEST edition of the 405gr, which I've heard about, that has a LOT of lead exposed, with a hollow point??? Mine are the old, traditional FT, dual diameter. I've hoarded some. They're tougher than Hawk's 400 and nearly as tough as Barnes. Cool

That's cool, because when I exhaust my supply of Speers, I'm going Remington. They're cheaper anyway.

I'd go with Remington but can't find anyone in Canada that has them at this moment.

I stop in the Graf's St. Charles Store and picked up 250 of the Hornady's off of the sale table for $25.00 a box. Last ones in stock there.
