Today I put on layaway my first true big bore rifle It`s a Whitworth Mark X Mauser in .458. It`s been magnaported and has a new decelerator pad on it, plus a model 70 type safety. I couldn`t pass it up. I`ve had several .375`s, a couple 45-70`s and a .450 Marlin, plus a 4 bore flintlock and a .72 double, but this is a true "stopping rifle". Just wanted to tell somebody about it!

Hoss,
I've got 2 58 call doubles.. and if you are running your 72 up to snuff, you won't care about the recoil diff in the 458.

best of luck

The .72 double is a pussycat compared to the 4 bore musket. That shoots a 1300+ grain round ball behind 250 grains of 2F. That will get your attention!

Hoss,
Great find! It would be hard for me to pass up one of those.

A Whitworth Mark X with a three position M-70 safety is a real peach! What is the market value for one of those in the Dakota Territory?

A ported barrel is O.K. on a stopping rifle, but if you ever get tired of it, that gun would make a sweet .416 Taylor with a rebarrel. Switch barrel thoughts come to my mind ...

A 375 bore Tikka, gotta love it.Sounds like a moose thumper deluxe.Interesting thread as I just cobbled together my own version of a 375.A stainless Model 70 375 H&H barrel and a 375 Weatherby reamer sorta found thier way to my house. When all was said and done I had a 23-1/8" 375 Weatherby on a Rem 700 action.Took a look around the gunroom and found an old BDL magnum stock,a set of Leupold QD's and a Leupold 2.5-8X and I was shooting.Heck finding a deal on dies though, still looking.I just got 100 once fired, resized Winchester H&H cases to fireform. It's gonna be fun!I'm using the 270 Hornady also.I got 36 Norma cases, some stamped 375 Weatherby with the barrel.Only 6 of them would chamber so I loaded them with a starting load of H414 and put three of them under an inch at 100 meters.A fluke I think.I hope it will shoot that well with real loads.Keep us informed how yours does on moose.I'll have to try some 4064,does well in yours.I'm thinking that the Weatherby chamber in 23" should at least run with the H&H in a 24" or 25" barrel.
