I e-mailed woodleigh's about making a batch of 480 gn ers with the cannelure in the correct place for .458's but got no reply, perhaps if more people sent an e-mail they would get the message and add them to their list of products.after getting no reply i contacted Bruce Bertram and got some of his 480's in .458 they shoot well and are haif the price. My standard range load is 70 gns of A.D.I.2206H

I traded some emails with Geoff McDonald at Woodleigh regarding the 480gr with the 458 cannelure back in Sept. He suggested I order them from Huntingtons. I spoke with Fred at Huntingtons just after that and he said they would start taking orders in mid Dec. for them. http://www.huntingtons.com/

Many ADI powders are marketed here in the US by Hodgdon in their Extreme powders. I don't have a conversion table handi, but does anyone know if ADI 2206H has a Hodgdon equivelent? I have also heard that Huntington's is the place to go to to get the 458wm cannelure on the 480gr Woodleighs. JPK Free 500grains

I will ask Geoff in the next day or so about the 480grnes with the 458win cannelure. AR2206H is the same as Hodgden H4895.

H4895 doesn't work well in my rifle with the 500 grainers, producing too much deviation with an increasingly flat velocity gain curve as load size increases, but it worked very well with 450gr NF's. Might just be the ticket for 480 grainers. JPK Free 500grains

W748 is a great powder for the 458WM and 500 grainers.I can get 2150 with lead jacketed bullets such as the Woodleigh fmj and the A-frame.It's an accurate powder also.Just a liitle compression but not enough to hurt anything.Vit 540 is my powder of choice for this job.It is the most accurate I tested and also produces the most energy without any signs of high pressure.

If enough US distributors place orders for Woodleigh 480grn 458 bullets with crimp set back for 458WIN then Geoff will make them. So if these bullets interest you, place an order.

Today,I used some 550 gr Woodleigh fmj bullets and some AA2230 powder.I got a good group at 100yds,just as good as with the W748.I did not chrono my load but it kicked real hard and I am sure it was up there.I have chronod shooting the 500gr Woodleigh fmj with the same powder and made a slight adjustment. It looks as though the Woodleigh bullets might not have been the rifling eroders I thought they were.As I continue to shoot them from my 458WM,they are still accurate. It seems that the TSX monometals were responsible for wearing down the bore of my Lott and not the Woodleighs.

I know I am going to kick myself for this question in the morning, but... Why would one bullet errode the bore or wear it down any more than another bullet? They are both copper, right? CISSP, CISA, CRISC looking for a IT Security/Audit Manager spot

One has a copper jacket and the other is all copper.Think about walking on wood floors compared to concrete. One is softer and easier on your bones.Same with bullets.

I will check my primer pockets for pressure with the AA2230 and give feedback. My W748 loads were easy on my cases.

That is what I thought you were saying. If you were talking about the difference between cast lead and copper I could see a difference over a 1000 rounds with a soft barrel. (For Soft barrel, think 45-70 trapdoor.) But with two bullets of generally the same construction I have a hard time imagining a significant difference. I tested them with a big hammer and they are not constructed the same.

Son,get a look at this.Hammer Time Compare the first bullet on the left to the second from the right and see why a bore can be ruined with a single shot.

Woodleighs are steel jacketed, lead core bullets with guilding metal plating, for lubricity. Barnes are a brass alloy. The are a banded bullet, with the bands being insignificant regarding barrel expansion. North Fork and GS Custom are copper bullets. They are both driving band bullets, where the shank of the bullet is under the bore diameter and the bands at groove diameter, with sufficient spacing between the bands to accomodate the material displaced by engraving. Easy on barrels. JPK Free 500grains

Driving bands are for medium bores. They have a negligble effect in big bores(slow moving bullets).Only a little piece of hard moving metal against the rifling is all it takes to sand her down.Look how accurate bullets can be without driving bans.100ydsopensight If I had a scope they would make a single hole.

What are you on? The thing that scares me is that I think you might believe this garbage. ddunn, Sorry I missed your question about other pressure signs with the 500 grain load that chronographed 2376 fps. I don't think I noticed any. The shot was louder and recoiled a bit more than the other shots I had fired and when I looked at the chronograph, that was enough. The bolt was also hard to lift. There may or may not have been a shiny spot on the case head or a flattened primer. I don't see any reason to try for high velocity with a .458 WM or to use any powder other than AA2230 with heavy bullets. 2200 with 500 grain bullets and 2250 with 450s is more than enough and easily attainable. Besides, North Fork and probably G.S. 450 grain flat-point solids penetrate at least as well as 500 grain round nosed solids. I fired one of the North Forks at a Cape Buffal using the Texas heart shot and it broke a front shoulder. The bullet looks brand new except for rifling marks. Indy Life is short. Hunt hard.

No problem The Lack of signs is very interesting. I have a feeling that the recoil will get me before I max out the load. It also leads me to believe that we could probably load the 458WM hotter if we had to OR we screwed up. As far as the Texas Heart Shot, that is just wild. Here is a group I shot today with AA2230 and the 500gr A-frames.The group was shot at 100yds,off the bench, with open sights.a It seems that this is a good powder with this bullet. The barrel has about 300rds through it.The rifle used is a CZ.

Checked the cases and no loose primer pockets with this load.I am going to chrono it and see what it gives. It is heavy on the recoil.

I spoke with Fred at Huntingtons this morning and he is placing his Woodleigh order now. Woodleigh will make more of the 480gr bullets with the 458 Win Mag cannelure but you have to order them now. I have placed my order and have some they had in stock coming and should have them in 4 weeks or less. The new batch if you order now will probaly be April delivery. You can reach Fred at 866-735-6237 if you are interested. You need to tell him you want the 480gr with the 458 cannelure.

Mine is a CZ 550 with a long action and long throat, making it equivalent to a Lott. But a good all-around load, that should work in any 458WM, is the 350gr Hornady RN (with the second cannelure) COL @ 3.2" crimped into bottom cannelure, 75grs RL-15, WLRM primers and Remington brass for the equivalent factory load in a 450 Marlin at 2100 fps and MOA. Easy on the shoulder, mild pressure and a good medium range load for medium game. Or, the same load behind the 405gr Remington for about the same speed when crimped into the bottom cannelure using a Lee crimp die. The 405 Rem has a better SD and BC; and is tougher to boot. Good for larger game out to 300yds! "Let every created thing give praise to the LORD, for he issued his command, and they came into being" - King David, Psalm 148 (NLT)

Just got back from the range and tested the 458WM with aa2230 and the Woodleigh fmj's.The Woodleigh fmj's are not accurate with this powder, to say the least.Neither do they have the same point of impact as the softs(2feet to the right and one foot below). This test was done from my CZ rifle. It might work well in another barrel, but I doubt it.

Shootaway....... You reported on this site not long ago that the barrel on your CZ was shot out. After only 150 rounds non the less. Did you re barrel your CZ. Or are you lying? Or are you just f'ing crazy?

The CZ barrel on my Lott was shot out because the TSX bullets wore out the rifling. It did wear out in that many rounds.I have know switched to lead and copper jacketed bullets and return with a smile everytime, from the range.I got a another couple of good groups with the 458WM,today.

I don't know why you don't use the 500's. I got an order out for Woodleigh, 458 500gr RN softs.I hope to get them some time in the early summer. They shoot more accurate than the a-frames,but are not as tough.
