thanks urdubob
There are several brands of black powder. Goex is common, Elephant is now extinct except in a few stray cans here and there. Wano is okay, but for sure, the pick of the litter is Swiss black powder. In 1.5 fg (aka #4) or 2fg (#3), it would be ideally suited to that rifle.
I'm curious as to the twist rate on that gun, and the land/groove diameters. Though I prefer rifles with hammers, this is a fine rifle and one that would serve you will with the original loadings.

Nice rifle urdubob! I'm also getting started with a "fatboy", though mine is a Swinburn Martini by James Rosier. First loads for me are 95 grs Goex Fg in new Kynoch cases and a 420 gr paper-patch bullet. If I were to use smokeless it would probably be with Accurate Arms XMP5744 and one of their loads for the .45-90 or .45-110 - see their web site at http://accuratearms.com/loaddata.html for details.

I'm glad to see there are other Martini shooters out there. I've got three, all mine are small actions. One in cadet form but with a .300 Sherwood barrel, two sporters in .380 Long. The sporters are really fabulous rifles, only weigh around 5 pounds, one folding and one fixed sight, oval shaped barrels wth the top cut flat.
Still looking for a decent deal on a 577-450.

Bob: Put in a data request for a 5744 load to Accurate Arms on their Web site, or call them. They provided me with good load data when I was shooting XMP5744 in a .577 Snider.

urdubob-You also should try one of the clean burning black powder substitutes. They match volumne with black,so filler might not be needed, and gun has same pressures as black loads.Ed.
