I have a client that has an RSM in 458 Lott. It lasted 60 rounds before the stock cracked. He has a wood replacement from Ruger but is looking at a synthatic or laminate and then have it properly bedded which it was not initially. Any ideas? Mark MARK H. I've seen a few posts like this over the years and the result is always the same. Nobody seems to be making a synthetic/laminate stock for the RSM's. I have one of the first generation RSM's in 416 Rigby and so far the factory stock has held up to the recoil, but I don't shoot it that often. I've often thought that a synthetic stock would be a good thing to have, but I've never seen one available. Tom Z NRA Life Member

Ditto lab man. Let Ruger replace those stocks forever. Ruger will also refuse to replace any stock of theirs if you have glass bedded the RSM walnut. It has a unique bedding system with detachable recoil plate in the forearm, with no primary recoil lug integral to the action. The heavier old ones are less likely to crack than the new ones, and the .458 Lott RSM rifle are all the new ones, with lighter profile 23" barrel. A synthetic stock would have to be made solid in the forearm to accept the recoil plate. Laminates are solid enough there, but like Labman said, no known maker. If I ever rebore my old fat-barreld RSM from .416 to .510, I will discard the recoil plate, put a washer-style recoil lug between the barrel and action (ala Remington), and add the secondary recoil lug to the barrel. Then the traditional epoxy and pillar "glass bedding" and cross bolting will be easier.

Wouldn't a good glass bedding job be better than sending the stock back and forth to Ruger every time it breaks? It's nice they'll replace the stock as much as needed, but that's only useful when your plinking at home not halfway through your safari. ____________________________ If you died tomorrow, what would you have done today ... 2018 Zimbabwe - Tuskless w/ Nengasha Safaris 2011 Mozambique - Buffalo w/ Mashambanzou Safaris
