Does anyone have any experience with the Sauer big caliber bolt guns. Good Bad or Indifferent.

Same gun as the old Colt Sauer. Slick-as-snot bolt, great reoputation for accuracy and reliability.

Thank you for the responce. If you had to have a tang safety on your rifles and you wanted a 458 would you think that was a good choice?

I certainly like my SAUER MOD90 Stutzen in 308.
They are very smooth, well made and a great engineering design. But not as simple (full proof) as a M98.
I would like to own one in 9.3x64B or 375H&H though.

A few weeks ago I shot a Sauer in 375 H&H for a buddy going to Africa.
The rifle was accurate, and functioned 100%.
I was suprised at the recoil, it was one of the easiest shooting 375's I have fired. We were shooting factory ammo.

It is a Nice rifle.

I have a sauer 202 in 375 H&H. Shoots very accurately and low on recoil.

Yes, I think they are the very best of the push-feed designs and with the single stack magazine system, feeding reliability is on par with the venerable Mauser 98. The magazine places the feeding round at bore level, centered. It has no where to go but in the chamber.

Thank you, after reading the art of hunting the african elephant by Richard Harland I am very interested in a 458 with a tang safety.

I used a Sauer model 90 in 375 H&h on a trip to Africa. It was my other rifle as I also had a 470 Rigby for buffalo. The Sauer was extremely accurate and was never fussy about what powders it was fed. I wished I had it today.

I worked on a ranch/pvt reserve in Mica and the German owned left his Sauer 90's on the property. One in .30-06 and one in .375.

They look flimsy and not rugged....but don't be fooled. They are damn accurate, slick and never gave problems, granted I didn't use them heavily (few impala and hogs) as I had my own rifle, but I was impressed. I hunted bushpigs with guy who had one in 8x68 and said of all his rifles, it was his go to gun, he simply could help but take it out the safe for any hunting, he loved the rifle (and cartridge).

As one post said, very comfortable to shoot. The stock design was great and fit me well...

The Sauer 90 chambered for the 458 Win Mag is one of the best push feed rifle chambered for a dangerous game cartridge. It is quality, in it's fit, and finish, it has the tang safety you want, though I'm not sure if it locks the fireing pin, or bolt, when on safe.

One other you might look at is the Steyr Mannlicher, which is also a push feed rifle, but it doesn't have your tang safety, and also available in 458 WM, but has a rotary magazine, and if an unlikely jam does occure, the removal of the magazine gives you more room to work on the jam, that the inline magazine of the Sauer, as the ejection port on both rifles is quite small to work through. Both are equal in quality of manufacture. They are both fitted with cold hammer forged barrels that are hand lapped, and both are tack driveingly accurate, which isn't much needed with a 458 WM rifle, in most cases, as not much long range shooting is done with this type of rifle.

The rifle that Richard Heartland used was a Mannlicher Shoenauer, model 72 S magnum, 458 Win Mag, which is even better than the other two because it had everything the other two have, but was CRF action,as well, and in addtion to the tang safety, which only blocks the trigger, the MS has a flagg safety like the Mauser 98, that is three way that can be used when no scope in mounted, the usual way a 458 win mag is set up. This flagg safety blocks the trigger, and fireing pin in the first possition, and the bolt trigger, and fireing pin in the full possition. The tang safety only blocks the trigger. Like Richard I quit buying Mannlicher rifles after they went to the Steyr Mannlicher, with it's PF action! I still have some of the mannlicher Schoenauer rifles, however.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Sauer 90 if you can "LIVE" with a pushfeed dangerous game rifle, it is a quality piece of steel fitting, outside the PF action configuration, but is about as sure fire as a puch feed can be!

I would love to have a M. S. 458 but I have never seen one. I wonder what price range they would be in if ever one was found.
