CZ 550 honeymoon is over ...

GroveCZ 550 honeymoon is over ...
Well ... the honeymoon is over with my CZ 550 Safari Magnum in 375 H&H.

After 80 rounds, the stock developed a crack just behind the bolt release and runs a little over an inch down along side the checkering.
Can't send it to CZ-USA as I've had it more than a year ... just haven't had the time to shoot or hunt these past two years. I found the offending protrusion near the bottom of the reciever channel and relieved it, but the stock still needs repaired. Fortunately, "The Stock Doctor" lives only 80 miles from me here in Oregon ... so, next week we take a trip to the "Doctor."
I really hope he can fix it so it will hold, because I really like this stock. It's the hogback style and the Turkish walnut is a beautiful dark honey color with darker streaks running through it.
I though I was in luck having the hogback style stock with all the reports of cracked stocks on the American Safari ... just goes to prove, check it over real, real good before you shoot that magnum.

475Guy1That's tough to take. But this has been apparent from other postings over time. Inletting on CZ's just isn't well executed at all. In fact some have even said that only the biggies need glass bedding, now we know ALL CZ's need glass bedding.

RIPYou debugged it. It will be stronger than ever when fixed properly and it probably won't even show unless you get out the jeweller's loupe.

jeffeossobed, wrist pin, and cross bolt it.. this SHOULD be done by CZ from the factory, and is a $250 option.
good luck

shootawayI believe the STOCK WILL CRACK if you do not properly clean the bore.

He's got 80 rounds through that barrel too, so its probably shot out eh? Should probably just buy a whole new rifle and start over.

In Canada the Pressure/Tempature relationship that the rest of the world enjoys, apparently does not exist??

ShowbartIt certainly can be fixed and as RIP said you may not even notice and it'll be stronger than than before. CZ might give you another stock, I'd demand it.

Bill CooleyHe is absolutely right I always pre warm my barrel with a propane torch when the temp hear in Texas get below 65 degrees. Just position the torch so the hot gases and flam go in the chamber and out the muzzle. Don’t do this for more than 5 minuets as you can run into high pressure from the hot African temperatures syndrome.
I hope this helps clear up this subject.

WhitworthBill, is it okay to keep a round in the chamber while performing this procedure?

kayakerSoooo...when its really hot the pressures decrease due to an expanding bore? Or is there a broad threshold of perfection between temp extremes?
Oh yes...if the bore contracts in the cold, then won't the bullets do so too? More so with all copper bullets, thereby negating this 'common' problem??

05 December 2007, 08:13
CanuckI thought it was the denser air in the cold that cause higher pressure. And when the bullet is leaving the muzzle and is pushing against the denser air, that makes it recoil more.
No?

The MetalsmithAh Yes! Shootaway has uncovered a certain secret for us living in Alaska! Yeah I may be stationed in Cali but I come back to alaska every year.
However doesn't everyone know we have to change our barrels after a good shooting session because firstoff, the increased recoil causes our barrels to flex downwards after a while, causing all of our shots to go low? This in turn causes undue stress on the stocks of our rifles and breaks them every which way. Not fun if you ask me. Costs me hundreds of thousands of dollars every year.
Shootaway, please tell me you're being sarcastic or are you really that dumb?

gumboot458..........Gotta be the latter

But seriously releasing endorphins is a pleasing side affect of Shoo thataway,s posts..........One can only read relatively real information for just so long ............This thread has almost been hijacked ,., I haven,t broken the stock on my Lott yet , and I hope I don,t as it fits like a nice glove ..I did hog out a little wood in places where I felt the recoil would cause the action to act as a wedge and so split the stock .....I also bedded the under barrel recoil lug plate with JB Weld ....I should put in a cross bolt ...One thing I have been curious about ,, Mine holds 6 in the magazine and one up the pipe ...Do they all ,,,Has anyone converted one to 470 Capstick and if so how many does it hold ,,,,,

shootawayIn very hot temperature chamber pressure goes up because slow burning powders are no longer slow.

enfieldsparesDoes not the rotation of the earth affect pressure? If you are shooting from West to East won't the rotation of the earth be trying to hold the bullet back in the barrel? So that pressure is increased?
Conversely if shooting East to West the spin of the earth aids the bullet and adds to the velocity of it?
05 December 2007, 15:38
ccif you hold your breath whilst firing the rifle, will the pressure increase also......

05 December 2007, 17:25
wjdOK, let's play.
Let's assume that, as we are told, the following hold true:
1) Cold weather constricts the bore; and
2) Hot weather makes slow burning powder burn faster.
Can we then also assume that:
1) Cold weather also contricts the bullet; and
2) Cold weather makes slow burning powder burn slower?
So, would the result not be the same or even LESS pressure?
Just wondering.

tradmarki do know cold weather can make hitting a baseball more painful, it also makes sparring in a cold boxing gym in chicago when the park district's heater/boiler is broken more painful, but having shot in subzero weather in colorado and shot in 100+ degree heat in texas, i've not had any rifles blow up on me.
in all seriousness, different materials will react differently to a given temp change. lead/brass/steel/wood/plastics will all change size differently in cold/hot weather.

Well the proper way is to hold the round in your mouth that way the temp is just right.

Grove,
We have become distracted by the great knowledge being imparted on us. I want to know how your trip to the stock doctor came out? I do think it can be repaired so it will be minimally visible. I do recommend you have the dock do a glass bedding and perhaps add cross bolts. Just to be on the safe side.

trekker111Since the rifle is a 375 H&H, you should be able to get away without adding any crossbolts.
I glass bedded my Hogback 375 before firing any rounds, and was surprised at how much void space there was under the barrel and behind the front lug. I bedded from the front lug back, and there are places where the bedding compound doesn't touch metal, and I put it on thick. I've put 500+ rounds thru mine to date, and while thats not much by some standards, I haven't had any problems yet.
15 December 2007, 22:27
JBDI've got a little over three hundred through my .375 CZ 550 American Safari Magnum with no problems. Glass bedded the action and forward lug before firing a shot. I sent the ugly original stock back and got a really beautiful piece of wood in return. Would definitely want a crossbolt for anything bigger.
