Any comments on the the relative comfort level of the Ruger No. 1H stock? I'm thinking of building a heavy caliber rifle on the No. 1. Just curious. Does anyone restock with better design? FFg
Ffg, I have a #1 in 458 Lott. I have put about 250 rounds through it and the key to recoil management, in my opinion, is a GOOD recoil pad. I have a decellerator on my rifle, and beleive it or not, the recoil is not that bad. My synthetic stocked Win. 70 375 H&H seems to kick alot harder. Also, the weight of the #1 helps alot. The PH in Africa was very impressed with the feel and balance of the #1. He also concurred that the recoil was nothing like what he thought it wouild be from that caliber. What caliber are you thinking about? Good luck, Tom

I have several Ruger #1's and the recoil from these rifles feels a lot less to me than other rifles that I have shot in the same caliber. The recoil from my #1H in 458 mag feels less to me than the recoil from my Marlin 1895G in 45/70 firing heavy loads.I also agree a good recoil helps a lot.
My BG rifle is a #1 in 500 NE. I had it made reasonably lightweight @ 7lb 90z and dressed up the original stock including a decelerator recoil pad. Off the bench it is stiff, but in the field it is quite tolerable.

The stocks on the Ruger 1A's that I have must be different than what's being discussed here. I find that the shape of the buttstock to be a old style and that it does hit me harder than some better shapes.
I have some single shots that were stocked by Floyd Butler back in the 40's thru the 60's that are the correct shape for a scope on a SS rifle and recoil management. So it can be done.
Thanks everyone! I'm looking to build either a .500 or a .577 2-3/4". If the latter, the stock will have mercury recoil reducer(s) and a pad. I agree that a cheekpiece would be nice. Thanks for the input.
By the way TJC, I never thought that I would run into anyone on the internet from High Ridge! I grew up there.
I have several from 22-250 to 416 Rigby and a lightweight 45-70. Of the lot, the 45-70 kicks the most but a Decelorator, as mentioned, tames the beast quite nicely. The Ruger stocks fit me so I have no problem with them.
FFG, It is a really small world, ain't it? If you are still in the area, and would like to shoot my 458 Lott, send me an e-mail and we could get together. Thanks, Tom
