I am looking for some help with 510 Wells loads, using up-to-date powders and currently available bullets. Any ideas? I just re-acquired my old rifle after 20 years.

You can use 500 A-Square data which is published in the A-square manual "Any Shot You Want". It can usually be found on http://www.alibris.com or http://www.amazon.com Alternatively, you could look at the data on Stevespages.com http://www.stevespages.com/510_1_600.html Good luck!

For my Wells I reduce A2 loads by about 5-10%. The case is slightly smaller. For plinking I use 45 grains XMP5744 behind 530 grain cast lead gas checks for about 1650fps. Other fun loads are 647 grain BMG bullets with 100 grains of 4895 for about 2150fps. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

Your rifle looks very similar to mine. By chance is it a Wells rifle? I have s/n 426. I was originally using 700 grain Barnes, the "solids" with the little vent holes front and back(copper alloy jacket). Not having a chronograph I never knew what velocity was being obtained. But they were quite effective on wounded buff, ellies, and the like, at the distances one usually deals with them, under 50 yards. They were even more effective than the 600 grain .460's also used in a second rifle, being pushed by 118? grains of 4350. The rifle, and myself, are pictured in Craig Boddington's "Safari Rifles". I will dig out my records and see what loads I was using on those 700gr Barnes. I later used A2 600grs bullets but was not entirely happy with them.

I have used IMR 4350, WW 760, and RE 15 powders. Barnes 600 and 700 gr originals and currently have the Barnes 570 and some woodleigh welds that I need to play around with. I believe that I am currently using 122gr of RE 15 with the Barnes 600 original producing 2600 fps. Keep in mind that this load is WAY above anything for the a-square as I did the majority of my load development ten years ago before I found this forum. I will not be loading them this high anymore.....

I do not know who made it, I bought it in California from Steve Wojtak. The only markings are the Brevex markings on the bottom of the action, SN 279. It has a 30" BMG barrel with Pendleton brake, cheap myrtlewood stock, no sights, just the old Bushnell ScopeChief, which works very well. I've thought about stocking it properly in English, adding express sights, rust bluing, etc. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

Weighs in at 13 1/2 lbs. I need a scope as my eyesight not what it used to be! Checked on old loads I was doing back in the mid '80's. The bullets were 750grs. Barnes, not 700. Ran with 103gr 4064, 102gr 4895, and 98gr 3031. Only powders that I had available in this country where reloading is not legal (TZ).
