I know this belongs more properly on a gunsmithing forum, but it will get more exposure here to people who will know dimensions even if they aren't gunsmiths. I just bought a bored-out .404 Jeffery barrel that has large ring Mauser threads. I have a spare German-made 1909 Argentine Mauser action in great condition. What alterations are needed to the Argentine action to feed and shoot .404 Jeffery? Will the bottom metal have to be replaced?

Go directly to Duane Wiebe for bottom Metal.
Get some 404 Jeffery bottom metal from him.
Fit that to the bottom of your M98.
It will be obvious from there:

A. Opening of action bottom width and length to match the Wiebe bottom metal:
Integral box of proper dimensions with hinged floorplate and matching follower from Duane.
B. Opening of bolt face and extractor shaping.
C. Ejector modification depends on A.
D. Feed rail reshaping.
E. Feed ramp reshaping.
F. Polish everything smooth internally.

The 404 Jeffery is the biggest cartridge head that you can easily and perfectly fit into a standard M98 Mauser.

The minimal case body taper helps reduce back thrust of bolt, and stacks nicely in a maximized Mauser box,
yet the long sloping shoulder and long neck of the case give an overall slick feeding shape,
and the nonrebated rim is another positive,
for feed function.

The 404 Jeffery is the best thing that ever happened to a Mauser. tu2

Recommend you post this down on the gunsmith forum as you'll get better more accurate information.

That first post sounds pretty thorough to me, but thanks, I'll do that.

RIP's post is correct – and the Duane Wiebe bottom metal that you’ll want to get is the 4MJ. I’m using that bottom metal on my two M98 Mauser builds (both FN commercial actions). Here’s a link to Duane’s website:

Next item you need, which is actually the most important, is a gunsmith that is an expert metal smith with the M98 Mauser action. I would offer my gunsmith but I’m on the West Coast and he’s in Washington State. Here’s a link to a thread I started in the Custom Rifle Forum that shows some of the work that Steve has done on my two actions:

This is the quality of metal work that you want on your M98 Augie and you’ll be very happy in the end.
