How reduced of a load can a 404 Jeffery be loaded down to, using a 300gn
jacketed (.429 pistol bullet swaged down) or a 300gn cast bullet?

Lyman has starting loads for the .375 H&H and 269gn cast bullets down to 1100 fps and even the .378 Weatherby Mag with a 267gn cast bullet starting at 1685 fps.

I was thinking it would be fun to have a very light load to shot at around 50 to 100 yds, like a .22 RF. Just for plinking fun, and maybe knock off a rabbit or ground squirrel.

I'm guessing it would have less muzzle blast than a normal load, so it could be fired in places where you don't want as much noise as a full house load

I shot some Bear Tooth cast bullets but didn't get very satisfying results. I can't even remember the load now. I too, would be interested in a good reduced load. I hope we get some responses here.

I have a 350gn GC mould and have found 1900fps the slowest load that will shoot accurately and at that it has done .33 of the bench through an aperture. I have a plinking load for a 400gn PB bullet at 1700fps and that will do 1.2 in from the bench. Not sure you could get the noise level down for civilised society though. I do stoke the 350 GC up to 2365fps for real fun though.

Should have added that the distance for the bench work with the aperture was 55 yds.

I am not familiar with shooting cast bullets......but think I would really like to start shooting them in my 416 & 458 Lott when it comes.

I got some reduced loads emailed me from Johan @ AA, would these be acceptable for cast as well? or would they be intended for jacketed bullets only?

Contact Accurate Powders

BobC of this forum has a reduced load for his 375 H&H that he enjoys shooting. A warning- DO NOT USE ANY FILLER WITH 5744.

Hope this helps. Let us know if you find something. I'd like to try it in my 404 Jeffery.

As penance for my sin of using Dacron filler with the Accurate XMP-5744
to produce a .395 Tatanka load giving 1600 fps with GSC 340-grainers,
I bring this data restricted to the safe side on all estimates.

My misadventure worked well, but caused some howls around here. Big Grin

Norma brass might be 114 grains H2O, but I plugged in the "AEM-measured" value of 111.4 grains of H2O.

A Hornady XTP .44(.429")/300-grain bullet of 0.850" length was estimated to be .860" long after sizing down.
No change in the .330" nose length from cannelure to tip.

This chart suggests using filler with the 4227 and 4198, but that sounds like a recipe for chamber ringing to me:
Over 50% air plus filler. A no-no.

I would stick to the 5744 with no filler.
