I'm new to this forum, and I've spent a lot of time reading about the big bores. I have shot a few .375's, .338-378, .458 lott, etc...and I was told the .460 wby was a punisher. Haven't shot it yet, but was wondering from people that have...is this the king as far as production rifles are concerned?
Secondly, I've found a few articles on this .577 t-rex, and it looks like a bad ass. Is this something i can buy or is it a custom job? i have access to custom work as my dad does some wildcatting, but I'm more interested in buying a rifle produced to fire that round. Where can i find one? about how much for a new one? and where do you buy the cartridges?

You probably want a 600 OK. They're sold here:

nickblaze,

Welcome to AR! The AHR dangerous game safari models start at $3995. If you can find one, the factory CZ550 Safari's in 505 Gibbs are priced around $2000.

Good hunting,

Andy

If you buy a completed gun, both will probably cost $4000-$4500. You can probably put one together for less, at least the .600 OK because of big rim size on .577 T-Rex, if you try. Not sure about .600 OK, but I asked awhile ago and A-Square told me they produced ammo for the .577, it was a little around $10 a shot if I remember correctly. MidwayUSA used to list it on their website but have since taken it down. I think it would be best to reload for these rounds anyway, it will give you a chance to work up to your maximum level of recoil. You will find that each round offers you more than enough recoil. I have a CZ 550 chambered in a .460 Weatherby, (not braked, no recoil reducers added). Quite a bit more kick than the .458 Lott had. The recoil of the .460 doesn't even get close to what the .600 OK and .577 T-Rex can dish out.

The 600 OK uses a single-stack box assembly that is a $600 upgrade from the basic rifle. I wouldn't try to get that round to feed any other way. It just won't happen in a CZ action.

The barrel and muzzle break are also probably an up-charge. E-mail Ed at AHR and he'll give you a quote. I think he's building 3 or 4 for various people right now.

Fischer,

Its not Boxer........my nickname is Gringo, but most women refer to me as handsome. Smiler

If I was going to get in the recoil business above and beyond say 404 or 416 like I have. I would probably go the Gibbs route, its got a pretty good cool factor to it also. But full house loads in Lott will knock the snuff out of your mouth.

A .600Ok ( which I invented) at full tilt ( 900 gr bullet at 2400fps) will generate recoil directly comparable to a .50BMG shot from a 12-15 lb rifle without a muzzel brake. This level of recoil can cause permanent physcial damage if you are not experienced with it. I Consider a 460wby at full tilt training wheels in comparison. -Rob

Hi Rob,

Out of morbid interest I wonder to what type of "permanent physical damage" are you referring? Are we talking broken collarbone, detacted retinas, concussion, or some combination of the above?

Thanks

I have often wondered how in the world you can endure the recoil of your various (using Taylor's terminology) "Ultra Large Bore" rifles.

People can learn to handle heavy recoil with experience and training. Baker was a great example. You need to learn how to hold and roll with a big kicker. Never ever shoot any position other than standing upright, and never from a bench. I don't fight it, just keep enough control on it so the gun doesn't come out of my hands. The bigger ones also exhibit a twisting in the hands on shooting that is very distrubing and can cause you to lose control of it unless prepared. Most neophytes are definately afraid of a big gun and do dumb things, hold the gun wrong, take their heads off the stock etc and get hurt. I have had one guy break a collar bone and have always been worried about retinal detachment myself. Personally, other than some terrible bruising of the shoulder I have been OK. I also have had both collar bones broken before and have large bone knots that according to my physcian provide additional strength against future fractures. Interestingly, shorter lighter built people tend to roll with the recoil more naturally than larger folks who seem to just try and soak it up

Didn't Baker end up a little "punch drunk" in his old age, which was attributed to his use of "Baby"?

If you want to get an idea of some REAL RECOIL GO HERE for some Video'd laughs. animal

Some of my favorites are: Norwegian Hero #1, Walter and the 577, and Willian and the 577 should be titled "Have a Seat." BTW, Ben and the 577 is one of the most published on the 'Net. Check out the GLASS in the shooting room!

Rob, do you have any Videos of your cannon being fired for us to see as a comparison to the .577 Tyrannasaur? Cool
