I have a 416 lazzeroni meteor. I shot my first buff, ele, an croc with it using 400 grain Barnes. This is a powerful round, for sure I have no less than three scope marks on my nose. I have shots a 458lott in old Brno, and felt that recoil was way less. My weapon is a synthetic stock with a fluted barrel. Small, 1.5x6 Burris scope. It probably weighs under 9# total. I have never shot any of the nitro rounds or any double rifle, or even a 458 win mag. I am wondering how the recoil would compare to my beast. I handle this weapon well, but would not mind getting beat on a bit less.

I think the problem must be one of three things: 1) stock fit - particularly length of pull; 2) your hold and stanc - are you creeping forward on the stock; 3) scope eye relief - too short and you will have to creep forward and get scoped. The 416 Lazzeroni is about the same as a 416 Weatherby and I've shot thousands of rounds through the four I have owned. Same with the 460 Weatherby and 600 Overkill and various Nitro Exprss doubles including the 600. I don't think you can blame the recoil. Have someone watch you mount the rifle a few times and take a few photos whild doing so. It will shed light on hold, stance and fit. Then have someone do some video of you shooting it and play it back slowly for the same reason. If it seems to be fit - particluarly a too short LOP, get one of the slip-on recoil pads - just to increase LOP. If that fixes the problem, you have your answer. scope bite on any caliber rifle is usually related directly to two factors, in this order: 1. Proper stock length for LOP 2. Proper scope mounting for eye relief Both can be corrected by a competent gunsmith or a talented amateur. Correction will make your life with the Lazzeroni much more pleasant. I should be more specific regarding the scope bit. It for sure has been me. The times I have been bit it has been on shots at small targets, like a croc brain or impala at more than 100 yards, so it have been not able to hold hard. Actually off a single camera pod while sitting down not even holding the front of the stock. This rifle was built by mark bansner, famous in the sheep world. So it is a good stock, custom built to me. So, for those of you who have shot this or the 460 weatherby and the nitro doubles, how dies the recoil compare?

If you can shoot that you can shoot anything I've listed just as easily based on my own experience. NRA Lifer; DSC Lifer; SCI member; DRSS; AR member since November 9 2003 Don't Save the best for last, the smile for later or the "Thanks" for tomorow

If your scoped rifle is less than 9 pounds, that is the obvious answer for a rifle almost as powerful as the .416 Weatherby Magnum. That is very light for such power. Get some lead or mercury tubes buried in the butt and forearm of the stock and fine tune the balance to just right. Get it up to 10 pounds scoped. Or, horrors, get a muzzle brake. Or just hold on tighter when shooting and do not crawl the stock.

Plug the variables into any internet recoil calculator and you will get an idea. http://www.handloads.com/calc/recoil.asp its subjective and depends on stock fit, and arguments between recoil impulse and velocity bla bla etc etc but generally the ftlbs recoil is a fairly acceptable rule of thumb to go off. As to that the lazzeroni should be 75-85ftlbs of recoil energy- a few % nastier than 416 weatherby as it runs 50fps faster and a fairish chunk less punishing than a max 460wby from same weight gun. As to the nitros some will not be as bad as the 416 since as calibres get bigger so does gun weight which drops felt recoil. A lot hang around the 50-70ftlbs recoil level, with the biggest like the 577 and 600 up to 90+. The heaviest recoil is guys shooting the 577 and 600 bolt actions from light guns and 150ftlbs recoil. Being that its 70-80% heavier recoil than your lazzeroni and not getting their faces cut up, you need to take the advice of some of the guys above to see what's going wrong for you.

Yes, check your length of pull, and keep your head up and back. For comfort and insurance, get a Nikon Slughunter 1.65-5 power, or the Nikon InlineXR 3-9 power. BOTH scopes have 92% light transmission, are reinforced for heavy recoil, AND have 5.0" eyerelief throughout the magnification range. Your eyebrow problem will leave, and you may find that you enjoy shooting the rifle a little more. 416's were made to be flat-shooting, all-around calibres. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.
