I thought RWS was again producing ammo for the 404 Jeffery. If this is true, does anyone know if and when it will be available in the USA and at what cost.

Thanks.

Ah Tim, that will be pricey ammo indeed. Just go w/ the handloads. Besides, RWS will not use the exc. NF anyway.

I think I read in this month's Guns & Ammo mag that Federal was going to be producting some 404 for their Premium line. Look for the article about the CZ 550 . . . I think it was Boddington who stated that.

ALF,

Thanks for the info. Is there any way to buy this ammo in the USA?

Fred, I have already loaded up 50 rounds of 404 Jeffery in various combinations of 400 grain Woodleigh softs, Woodleigh solids & Swift A-Frames. I used starting loads of RL-15, Varget, IMR 4831 and your suggestions RL-19. I am hoping for just over 2,200 fps out of my 25" barrel which should be pretty easy to get.

It looks like the RWS ammo is claiming 2,300 fps out of a 25.5" barrel. Thought is would be interesting to try some out and to see how it shoots.

Also, I have a box of 380 grain North Fork Cup Point solids on order and should get them soon. I will also get some of the soft points when Mike does another run.

My gun should be back to me in about 3 to 4 weeks (finising the stock and blueing).

I have used RWS ammo in my .404's for many years and it is still standard issue for our vet department, although Parks has run out.

In my H&H's 22" barrel I got 2309fps (av) with a SD of only 6fps (5 rounds)

In the Cogswell & Harrison's 26" barrel I got 2340fps.

The older ammo with the silver coloured FMJ bullets is fine for buff but not for elephant. Even on buff the bullets break open or fishtail. The latest ammo that our vet department bought has Woodleigh solids loaded and it is superb. You can tell at a glance which ammo is which as the woodleighs are the usual copper colour.

Huntingtons carries RWS brass. I'd contact them, though their website appears to be down at the moment.
