SmilerHey guys the completion of my new 416 Rig is close, maybe next week. I need to choose a nice Tradition Leather sling to go along with the classic fine wood. Need your suggestions??

Although not completely leather, the "Trader Keith" Canvas and Leather sling at $50 is the best I have found.

www.jeffsoutfitters.com has all leather and canvas and leather traditional style slings.

That being said, the neoprene types like Vero Vellini and others really distribute the weight and their stretching and flexing seem to make the rifle weigh less.

I like ErIc Ching's "ching Sling" and Safari Slings" - Both good quality leather. Cannot for the life of me remember the name of the US company that makes them Glaxco?? It is a concept that works.

The maker of the Ching sling is Galco Gunleather. Here's the link to the sling

I must admit that I once was a leather sling traditionalist. That has since changed. I bought a Ching Sling, tried it out, and sent it back. I used to shoot a lot of smallbore competition when I was a kid, so I'm apprenticed in the use of shooting slings, but I just didn't like all the material hanging out there, so I bought a Vero Vellini and adjusted it to a proper "shooter's sling" length. Worked great, and the elasticity of the Vero is great, particularly after you've been humping that cannon through the boonies for a few days.

Just my 2c...

As ozhunter has mentioned, the leather and canvas is very nice. It looks great and is very comfortable for the long carries. It is not really a shooting sling, but I don't notice it much in the sticks and if we are on the track of an animal I take it off.

Westley Richards has a very nice canvas and leather sling. It's nice and wide and distributes the weight nicely. I put one on my Heym bolt 404 Jeff....it seems to work great. It also has quick detach swivels which is nice if you need to go into the thick stuff to sort things out.
It's a bit pricey at about $90...but very high quality.

Don't laugh, but my RSM "work gun" wears a TAG-safari Nile-crocodile sling. And before any ribbing me about it, I must add, that it has served me very, very well, and is very comfortable, and does not get in the way like a lot of others I've tried. Best $75.00 I've ever spent on a sling. Now, I know I'll never be able to live this one down.lol
All of my other rifles however, have simple, unadorned leather strap slings. Actually, long, belt-blanks, made into slings. I have found them to be perfect. I make these myself, as anyone can do, and they are wonderful.

I have several 7/8 inch plain leather non ajustable slings. They bite into the shoulder and don't slip off no matter what. you get used to them. Most English big game rifles use 7/8 inch swivels and barrel band swivel up front and are not used for shooting. These slings are simple, easy to put in a pocket when not in use. I only use a sling in Africa when I am helping pack something to the truck or ???????
I like the gun in my hands when in elephant, Lion, and buffalo country. I missed a huge Buffalo bull some years ago because my gun was "slung"! Another time I missed a huge elk because my gun was "slung" Smiler Smiler

I have one of Eric Ching's Safari Slings, and I like it enough to swap it from rifle to rifle. I have been using it for 5 years now (it was one of the Galco prototypes). It also does not require an additional mounting point as the Ching Sling does.
