This may not be a true big bore but I picked her up last week, new in the box. I have heard about all the feeding problems people have had with these rifles in this caliber so I was a little nervous. Nothing like having to send a brand new gun, that won't function or has problems, back to the maker before you even get a chance to shoot it, (hello Springfield XDS). So Monday I start looking for ammo. There is none that Google can find. Found some brass at Grafs and Sons, ordered it up and it just arrived. No bullets unless I pull some out of some of my Rigby's but don't want to do that so what to do?
I opened the box of Hornady unprimed and three empties in the gun. I worked the bolt three times as fast as I could and all three empties flew 1/3 way across the room. Other than a little bump when the case mouth hit the feed ramp at the front of the magazine follower, it fed slicker than a button. The case mouths are not even dinged up, there are a couple of light scratches on the brass from the sharp edges on the sharp edges of the feed rails but not bad. Now if I can only find some 350 mag tips and make em shoot, I might just have something here.

Steve, you're right! I just checked all my usual places for you, and everyone is out. I've had 2 416 Alaskans, and didn't have trouble finding ammunition when I had mine. Guess you'll have to roll your own for now.

Was just down at Cabela's in Lehi, Utah this weekend and they had 3 boxes of Hornaday DGS on the shelf for $62 per box.

I love mine, even tho it is a first generation with the sling swivel stud in the stock. You will only forget that once, and after that it is second nature to watch hand placement. Tack driver with 400's, and with 350 grain Barnes TSX it is an elk-killing monster!

Someday, someone is going to have to explain to me how a 416 is not a true big bore. Be it ruger, rem, or rigby... They are stoppers for sure.

Go forth and enjoy your big bore!

I was just thinking the 350's would work a little better out of this twenty inch barrel. I got a 550 euro, and a No 1 in the rigby and converted mod 70 super grade 300 win to 416 rem with a brand new win take off barrel. No problem shooting the 400 grain bullets there.
The 350 mag tip, tsx just seem right for this little gun. I'm waiting on Rcbs right now and might pick up a few 400 partitions to go along with it to see how they do.
If anyone wants one of these guns, CDNN has 6 more left at 699.99. I got two boys and try to buy everything in two's but just can't swing another right now, unless I move something. I think they have some 375's too. I used Ken, real easy transfer.

I like 416s in my buffalo operation ,but as we hunt in a very small town in the north of Argentina and its very difficult to findnew calibers so i stick to the classics like 416 rigby or 416 remington .The rifle design its very practical but i dont see any advantages in this new calibers very difficult to find in Africa ,Argentina or Australia ,where they would be used.
Regarding reliability Rugers are CF but they have a tigth chamber ,and sometimes we saw problems to extract.By the way we didnt saw the same problem with CZs or Zastavas ,that have a very bad stock for humid conditions ,bad finnish ,but work perfectly .

Just got off the phone with Ruger.
Although not listed in their new book, Ruger is still making the Alaskan in 416. Not new ones to market but production to fill back orders. So new guns should still trickle out here and there. My serial # 711-83763 shipped out December, 2013.
Screw under the floor plate at the front of the action should be set to 95 inch lbs or 8 ft lbs, all others hand tight or snug. Per Ruger.

I have never had any feed problems with a Ruger, and I've shot and owned a lot of them..I like the Ruger Hawkeye African about as well as one of my custom Mausers or pre 64 Win. Ruger is a great gun..You won't have any problem getting the 2400 FPS holy grail of velocity with the 400 gr. bullets in that short tube.

I have built a couple of custom 416 Rugers on Mauser actions and the case is pretty easy to make feed..

The hard rounds to make feed are the big boys starting with the big cased 404s and up..it just takes more time, and most of the time folks are using actions that are too small. Cramming a 416 Rigby or 505 in a std. 98 is a "Blivit", thats 10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag, it can be done, but its messy! barf

So i would like a rifle with the barrel of a cz and the finnish and stock of a Ruger but in a classic 416.

Thanks for the tip! I was thinking about getting one, and when I saw this thread and that price I decided to take one off their hands. Can't wait to pick it up - now I just need dies, bullets, brass, and powder for yet another cartridge.

My current .416 Ruger load is 75.0gr of Re15 with the 350gr TSX bullet, muzzle velocity is around 2435 fps.

I have also used the 300gr TSX with 83.0gr of Re15 to get a muzzle velocity of around 2650 fps.

(loads safe in my particular rifle only)

Historically 'medium bore' cartridges ran from .264 caliber up to <.400 caliber. The >/=.400 caliber up to <.458 caliber were termed 'heavy medium' or 'large medium' bore cartridges. 'Big bore' or 'large bore' cartridges started at .458 caliber up to .510 caliber. Cartridges >.510 caliber were termed 'ultra big bore', 'ultra large bore', or simply 'ultra bore'.

The AR Forums has determined to lump all calibers >/=.375 caliber as 'big bore'. In this case the owners win out...

that is one pretty round and one pretty bullet.

If that is the most accurate load in your rifle, stay with it, cf course. If you want to try more, the 416Ruger typically handles about 5000-5200 ftlbs, giving about 2600fps with the 350 grainers.

tu2 There's no flies on the 416 B&M. And it becomes only better when paired with the 50 B&M...

The more I play with thing the more I like it. Still waiting on dies......but those feed rails are scratching up my new brass so I dropped the whole package off at Mr. John Gallaghers on Thursday, for some rubbing on.
For those who don't know Mr. Gallagher or his work, you are missing out. Got several of his single actions and he's worked on a bunch of rifles for my Dad and I; one damn fine gunsmith.
Around here if you get Gallagher to build it and Dave Wills to stock it, it will be as good as it gets.
I hope John and Dave read this. I got two more projects I'm thinking on and I need a deal.
