which reloading press for big bores?

I now own a 470 NE and just today realized that my RCBS press is not tall enough to reload the 470.

Any suggestions on a good press to buy for the bigger cartrdges? All my dies and shell holders are RCBS so something compatible is necessary. RCBS Ammo Master? Redding T7? something better?

about 100 bucks
rcbs supreme...

i gave up on several for it...

the ammomaster is HUGE and after loading 100 or so, makes my shoulder hurt... course shooting bigbores might have a tad to do with that

Do you have a Rockchucker?? I have an old one,I can load 577 3",although I have to push the bullet up into the seater!!!

If you can find one an old Lyman O-Mag should work. I load the .300 & .375 H&H on mine. It has a 4" opening measured from the top of the shell holder. Every once in a while you can find them on e-bay. I just looked a few minutes ago and the do not have any listed today.

Robert, I do have an old Rockchucker. It only has 3 3/8" of clearance from the top of the shell holder to the bottom of the threaded part of the frame.

Jeff, which ones have you gone through and what put you off of them?

I use my old RCBS JR to load 416Rigby, 510Wells and 458Lott the same way: by pushing the bullet up into the seater as I insert the case into the shellholder.

If you modify the shellholder by grinding away part of the lip back to a half circle of engagement you can easily load 470NE on a rockchucker. You then just load normally as this allow you to tip the cartridge to get bullet into seater and slip the base into the shellholder. I have never had a problem with it of any nature.

For N.E. rounds I settled on the RCBS ammomaster single stage press..It will load up to 50 cal. browning machine gun and you have a world of room to work in....It is not particularly expensive.

I am using a LEE Classic press. I do have to "slide the finished 475 #2 Jeffery out of the shell holder when it's done. My 450/400 3 inch is a snap.

I second the RC Supreme. Had the same problem...old RC. Sold that and bought the Supreme for $100. Works great...just like the old RC I knew and loved. I also reload for about 8 or 9 other calibers.....I fear change. The Supreme prevents too much of that.

Can anyone confirm that the new Rockchucker "supreme" can handle a .375 length cartridge, with a max weight Barnes X on top, and still clear the die?

I have the old RC, and don't mind spending the $100, but I want to be sure I'm done with the tipping first. I'll be ticked if I end up tipping it in anyhow.

If you are going to load the big nitro cases then do yourself a favor and get the RCBS A-2, in single stage...

I have used them all and its simply the best of the bunch by a long shot..

Here is what I have chosen for my bigger rounds....it is an Aussie Made "Zero" brand press made by an elderly German chap. It is of high quality.

I vote for the Forester C0-Axial press. It is very strong, plenty of room to work, and easy to change dies.

Can't beat a big Ammomaster. Can change top
plates, use big holders for monster cases,
forms cases easy,etc.A still do regular cases,
and has progressive attachments for speed
on regular cases. Best buy for the bucks, for
what you can do with it..Ed.
