Howdy all,
Other than the question of properly headstamped cases,(if Dakota folds), are there problems with either of these rounds? It seems to me that thay are equal except for long action/standard action. The Jeffery has a long illustrious history to go along with the fact that it is a round that has done everything ever asked of it. What better praise can one give to anything. Any input will be appreciated.
It looks to me like "404 Dakota", here I come!
Thanks, Doug

Only from the standpoint of inexpensive brass, I would go with the Jeffrey. Cases can easily be made from .375RUM brass and the Dakota brass will be a lot more. When it comes to the real McCoy (proper heastamp) I don't know which would be more. For naustalgia's sake, I would still go for the .404 Jeffrey.

Below is a picture of a moderately loaded .404 Jeffery (400 grain Swift A-Frame at 2300 fps). As you can see, it does wonders on plains game. I took several animals at ranges of over 200 yards on this safari (and an elephant at 12 yards with solids).

The gun is a Winchester Model 70 with a new barrel and NECG sights (and a .375 follower that makes it feed like poop through a goose).

With the renewed interest in the Jeffery, that's where I'd go.

Lots of 404 Jeffery brass around. I love mine. At historical velocities of 2125 with a 400 grain bullet, it has and will get the job done.

Do not think this rifle will not have recoil. It has plenty. Up in the 2300 fps range, in a 9 1/2 pound rifle you'll know you touched one off!

If you are looking to romance a cartridge that's been there, the 404 Jeffery is the one!
