Looking for some info on whats a good solid to load into the .375 H & H for my next Africa trip (May/June of 2008). I've got a good load worked out with 300 gr Nosler Partions, and while buffalo is not on my list, figure it can't hurt to have a few solids with me just in case time/circumstance/money give me a shot at one. Not looking for load data as much as the bullet itself in a 300 gr weight range.

I was in Zimbabwe last October and my PH Garry Duckworth had me hunt with the first round as a soft and everything else under it as a solid for those "Going away shots," The solids were also mandatory for the little guys like Duiker and Klipspringer. I used a soft on my Klipspringer,.......Eww, sorry about that,......My Bad.

So, I certainly think bringing a box or two of solids is a good idea and I was very happy with Barnes Banded Solids. If it makes a difference I used TSX's as my softs and was also very happy. With the same powder in the same ammount they grouped together so no matter what was in the chamber I knew the gun was going to hit.

I was a different story.

My .375 really likes Federal 300 grain Speer Trophy Bonded Sledgehammers. They have the same point of aim as the 300 grain Nosler Partitions that I shoot most of the time.

Never worry about theory as long as the machinery does what it's supposed to do.

I have used both Woodleigh solids and Barnes Banded solids in Africa. I usually make my decision on which one shoots to the same point of aim as the soft I will be using.

I like the GS Customs flat nose solids the best by a long shot...but any good solid today will work just fine..Woodleighs have a great track record, but if buffalo are not on your menu, then the 300 gr. softs will also get you by on buffalo...

The latest addition of the Hornady solid is supposed to be a steel jacketed FN solid. It may also be the most reasonably priced. The original Hornady steel jacketed RN solid worked extremely well for me on buff.

According to hornady tech I talked to the new 300gr Dangerous Game Solid bullet is copper clad steel like the old fmj. The 2 new Hornady factory loads for 375 H&H in their Dangerous Game Series look like they are flat points in the illustration, but the tech said that the factory loads are loaded with item no 3727 which is illustrated as a rn solid in the component section. They have a standard load, 300gr @ 2530fps for $66.22/20 and the "heavy mag" load 300gr @ 2705fps for $76.05/20. The component bullets are $35.91/50 but not available for purchase yet.

Midway has the 375 Hornady solids and probably about as cheap as they ever will get.

Right after I decided to by my 375 H&H, but before it arrived I was looking at the component shelf, digging around looking for 375 bullets and noticed 2 boxes of those bullets buried in the back for $7.95 a box and snatched them up. I really have no immediate need for solids, but I couldn't pass them up at that price. I went ahead and worked up a load for them that hits the same as my soft load. They do work well on otter though. Long story.
