SAAMI specs show that the standard for overall length in a finished 416 Rigby cartridge to be 3.750 inches, if I remember correctly(I may be wrong). For those of you who load this cartridge, is this the length that you typically load to. I have an Ruger RSM that will not accept cartridges loaded to this length. Any comments would be appreciated.

I typicaly load to the canalure on the Hornaday or Nosler bullets. Doing so means that my OAL is shorter than SAMMI (the canalure is cut for 416Rem cases), however the data provided by these Hornaday and Nosler uses the shorter length.

MikeD, I load my Rigby ammo like Tailgunner does. I end up with COL of 3.65" - 3.69" depending on bullets used. The magazine box of my Ruger measures ~ 3.75" I do experience some problems with the 3.69" loads not riding up the front feed ramp smoothly. The Hornady bullets load to ~ 3.66" and feed smoothly 99% of the time. I should say that the feeding issues apply only to round nose bullets. Spitzers and semi-spitzers seem to feed fine out to 3.69" COL.
Are you loading to the cannelure? If so what bullets are you using?
I load woodleigh 410 gr .416's to the cannelure and they feed fine, the other type I have used Taipan 400 gr RN's will not for the life of me feed if I use ther cannelure I have to seat those bullets quite deep measurements escape me at the moment.

My Ruger M77 has a very short throat. I have to be particularly careful with Swift 400 gr. bullets. The magazine will take them to almost 3.75 but I cant go much past 3.6 with the Swifts. I learned this the hard way having one stick in the chamber on an elk hunt. C.G.B.
