I'm starting one of those do it your self projects that turns into an obsession or a labor of deep interest. There are probably lots of you out there that wonder how you would make out with a do it yourself big bore project so I'll post pictures as I go along and if there is interest or points that someone would like to make please feel free. The project is open to suggestions also even though I'm off in a straight line at this time. I have people in mind for the few things that scare me and I'll try to keep track of cost as I move along.

This is the begining
470 Mbogo
Your probably wondering what the blue forend is on the stock.I wanted to have a different forend shape on my new stock so I wrapped the forend of my 500 A-Square stock with saran wrap and then duct tape. After this I used the feather light body filler to build up the stock forend for a template for duplicating. When the duplicating is finished I can spit the duc tape down the barrel chanel and peel it off like a cast withour any damage to the finish on my original stock. The picture below shows the trial stock with the cast off and the 500 stock with the stock cast on.

This may be a silly question, but what cartridge, action, and barrel?

It will be built on a Bruno 602 action with a Precise Metalsmithing Ent. three position wing safety. The barrel will be a 23 inch Pac-Nor super match grade Chome Moly chambered for the 470 Mbogo. The barrel will have a barrel band swivel with the Dave Talley rear sling swivel that is the inletted two screw type. The front sight will be a NECG Masterpiece which is a barrelband type. There will be a quarter rib on the barrel for a future three leaf sight but it will sport an Ashley peep now. The pistol grip cap is the one shown that is made by Dressels.

There is a God. So far I've managed to get the blank from this.

To this without incident just a few small puckers and oh dam's.

I'm just waiting for my barrel so I can get it chambered and then open up the balance of the barrel chanel. I've changed the feed ramp and polished the action inside. My bolt is out having a custom checkered knob put on by Chris Webber in Kelowna. I think I made him a good trade. The stock has been wet sanded to 400 grit so far but the pictures are still in my camera. But it has really brought out the best in the stock wood.

Take care

Hi Canuck,
The project is moving along just fine. My barrel just arrived today so I will have lots to do and hopefully things will take shape and be shootable soon.
This is where I'm at now.

I've just finished putting the rest of the oil on the stock so it's looking a lot richer and deeper that this photo.
Take care,

If you find time, could you explain this duplicating from a template process a little bit? Are you trying to make the forend on the new rifle match the outside contours of the built up body filler cast? How is this done?

Thanks,

H. C.

HI HenryC470,
I had originally built up a bruno stock by cutting down the top and sides of the butt stock and then rebuilding it with larger pices. I had then built a couple of stocks off this pattern. The 500 A-Square stock was the result. With this new project I wanted to have a deeper looking forend so I wrapped the 500 stock with Saran wrap and then Duct tape. With this base I built it up with a featherlight body filler to the larger dimensions. I then wrapped the balance of the stock in Duct tape so the finish wouldn't get marked. This became the template for the new piece of Turkish Cirrcassian.
This is a picture of the 500 stock and the blank on the duplicator.

What you were suggesting is correct. The duplicator follows a template and has cutters that copy the stock as the contour is followed. They can also copy the inletting for the action. The machine pictured will still leave the stock rough and they ussually put in a spacer on the tracer head so your dimensions are over sized by .030 approximately. There is still plenty of work to do. I hope this helps you out.

This is a picture with the bottom metal in the white.

I filed and finished the floor plate metal in order to create a larger area for engraving and to smooth out the lines of the 602 floorplate.
Here is a close up of the floorplate

470 Mbogo- Looking Good! Nice work on the stock and the ebony foreend. I now have all the parts for the 470 MBOGO. The Elk Ridge stock inletted for the 1917 Enfield action arrived yesterday and I may start threading the barrel tomorrow. The action feeds the 470 MBOGO beautifully and the left hand laminated stock actually fits the action. The dies will be made by CH4D and they should be here in August. Thanks again for the stock blank. I have another .375 CZ550 and have not deceided what to build on it yet. -Rob

Hi Gents,
Thanks for all the compliments. I've had a great time working on this project and so far there has been very little frustration. I bought the piece of wood through Dressels. they have a website at www.dressels.com. They have pictures of all their blanks from both sides. You just pick the type of wood your interested in and the dollar value and the site will show you the blanks that are available.

Canuck,
If it's done by Sept. I'll bring it out with me and we can put it through it's paces.

470M,
That's looking pretty good. Whose duplicator? If you are in this area bring it by. I still have a piece of your 500 A-Square brass which I will hold for you! Regards, Bill.

Looking good. I see all the bits and pieces we talked about have arrived and are assembled.

I've finished the stock for the M54 mexican from the blank you gave me. It turned out great.

I'm heading out to FSJ for a couple of weeks. See you when I get back.

Hi Bill,
The duplicator is Don Robinson's in Kelowna. I thought that he had retired and sold all his duplicating gear to someone is Saskatchewan. But he still has his big duplicator and only works when he wants or has arrangements. He is one really nice guy. He is actually thinking of selling this duplicator also. He works out of the back of Chris Webber's shop. If you would like more info just email me. I had a couple of other pieces of wood duplicated at the same time and will finish one so if someone would like to make a stock for a 602 or 550 they can get in touch with me for a template. I will be out your way in Sept to visit with Chris and Bill so I'll get them to point me in the right direction.
Take good care,
