what I learned in gunsmith school today...
1. it always takes one more trip in the lathe than
you think.
2. it always takes two more cranks on the reamer
handle than you think to set the headspace.

But, it went to the indoor range across town this morning and got test fired two rounds. I had one viable option, 650gr cast bullets my brother shoots in his Sharps 50-90. So I lubed them by hand and seated them to even with the front driving band in front of 100gr H4350 depth. It was a major religious experience holding the barrel in one hand and the front of the receiver ring in the other and pushing the trigger against the bench. Both times!!

3. making things on the lather or in the mill is NEVER!! as easy as a competent machinist/gunsmith makes it look. Had to make a casemouth centering spud for the RCBS power casetrimmer in .510" diameter to trim cases. Found out they shrink a bit in fireforming, so the oal is set at 2.96" for trim length.

Class was dismissed, and I went off to sight in the granddaughters Ruger RSI 243...boring!!

regards,

Rich

PS: this is much more satisfying than having the gunsmith do it...in 1/10th the time.

RIP
Hey Rich,
Congratulations on still having two eyes and ten fingers. clap
Did you write a chapter about wildcats in a reloading manual?

Yes,

I wrote for Precision Shooting Magazine for about nine years. Articles most months about long range live varmint shooting, a year long series about Schuetzen competition, chapters for their annual on Wildcats three or four years. Had a great time, learned an awful lot, and met a huge number of very knowledgeable folks in various disciplines that I called upon for technical expertise over the years. Got midlife crisis: don't drink (much) or do drugs, and my lovely wife keeps me worn out...all that was left was Harley-Davidsons and building a new house.

So, I did.

I am going to get back into writing for PS I think, and do some things on big bores and my trtip to Africa next spring with the 510KX and 600gr lead bullets.

regards,

Rich

Rich,
sounds like you need a mule stock... one that is hogged out for a 1.25 shank, and a 1" "taper" that you can bolt a stock into for test firing!!

aweome work!

Pegleg,

yes, I am that Rich Kayser. 257 Banshee; necked down and blown out 6.5x68S. I think it was about 1990 or 1991 in Precision Shooting Magazine. Add 250-350fps to a 257 Wby and no belt!!
