I have a .460 Wby and I have been thinking what other calibers the Mark V action can take? 585 NYATI or .577 TYRANNOSAUR...? Or is it to small... [Confused]

Any one who know if A-square is going to start again?

At the risk of offending weahterby fans, let me mention that I know a gunsmith who used to work at Weahterby who said they got a lot of Mark V's returned because they jam. It seems that the sheet metal lips of the magazine can go out of whack.

Sorry-Overkill but the WBY MKV action might make a good 500 A2, but no possibility of a T-ReX. As 500 grains has said, this action barely feeds the 460 properly and given it's extractor system I would not build a NYATI on it. For the NYATI get a CZ550 or 602. For a T-rex you have only the modified 1917 Enfield or BBK02 to choose from. You must have a bolt bigger than .720 for the T-Rex rim or a viable alternative .-Rob

Not to be contrary, but there has been at least 1 577 built on the Granite Mountain Arms action which sports a .750 bolt diameter. And there have been some 585 nyatis built on it too. Budget $10K and a 1 year wait and you will have a beautiful rifle with barrel band front sight, integral rear quarter rib and sight, integral barrel lug, wonderful English classic stock, etc.

This action would make a fine mooring block for a rowboat that leaks.

A .550 Magnum would be the biggest. be not afraid to build on this action. If done by a proper gunsmith, it will be exelent. Wea'by's have had their share of lousy product controll and ammo with to high preassure, but a customized MarkV is a grand thing. I have made a few, and they have seen pretty rough use in Africa, and all have served flawless. They have been chambered for the .378 Weaby and .416 Rigby.
I would build a .550 Magnum without hesitation.

There is a fellow on this forum

http://www.weatherby.dk/

who has what amounts to a 416 Chey Tac on a Mark V.

Personally I would not want a rim diameter bigger than the 378 case because you finish with very thin metal in the bolt nose. Similar to a Rem 700 done to the 378 case head. Actions like HS Precsion with Rem bolt diameter in the 378 and 338 Lapua are different because the locking lugs extend to the end of the bolt nose.

I would also avoid any case that is more rebated than the 378. The reason is that when the Wby bolt is opened one row of lugs are on the bottom and this results in the case being pressed down below the bolt nose. If you have quick hands and the magazine spring is a bit weak then closing the bolt will mean the front bottom lug will pick up the case. Although a PH on NitroExpress.com has one in 500 Jeffery. However, I suppose that is not all that different to the 378 given the belt diameter of the 378 and the head diameter of the 500 J.

As Bent has said it is 500 A2 and 550.

What to build on a Mark V action

The best use for a Mark V action is to build a bolt action 20 guage shot gun, for a fancy Mosburg DUCK GUN! Wink animal

It is no news to anyone here that The Weatherbys are not my favorite brand rifles, since they went away from the FN MAUSER actions of a few years ago, to the pushfeed Mark V action. I will say if I had to have a PF action, the Mark V would most likely be the one I'd choose! Not much danger in that, however, since there are a number of good CRFs left!

As far as the WBY cartridges go, the only one I like is the 340 WBY MAG. That one is one of the best mountain, and cross plains rounds for Sheep, open grass shooting of Pronghorn, and cross canyon Elk! However, Id rather have it in a good CRF action though!

Ditto what Bent said. Its a 460 blown out to 55 caliber and the most bang for the bucks: 700 grain bullet at 2350-2400 fps. You know when the thing goes off.
