I have 55cal boyes cases, and I was thinking
of straightening them out for a 775HE(10ga)
but it isn't that much bigger than 700HE or
12GA FH for the trouble, forming, changing primer pocket , so go bigger with 8ga FH.
I have case here I expanded for 585 bullet.
The Boyes bullet is .562 diameter, not .550,
cases are Berdan primed which is a pain.Ed

Thanks, Ed.
The 55 Boys has quite a belt in more ways than one.

That 50 Vickers looks like it would be similar to a .505 Gibbs. Bigger or smaller case capacity? bewildered

Was the 50 Vickers .505 or .510?
Which came first, the .505 Gibbs or the 50 Vickers?
Tricky British, eh?

RIP:

The 50 Vickers is significantly bigger than the 505 Gibbs, between it and the 50 BMG. The measurements from the speciment in my collection (K41 FIZ with a loose bullet) are as follows:
cartridge o.a.l. - 4.33";
case o.a.l. - 3.17";
case length to shoulder - ~2.52";
case neck length - 0.49";
rim dia. - 0.717";
head dia. - 0.725";
shoulder dia. - ~0.635";
neck outside dia. - 0.535";
bullet dia. - 0.515" below the upper (mouth) crimp groove, and 0.512" above it.

Cheers, Al

You're right on measurements, I hit wrong button
on figuring from mm to inches.
I think the Gibbs come out about 1911, and the
Vickers 50 about WWI. Where could a guy find a bunch, as they would be perfect to make a
600HE Belted case. I madeone with machining and heavy swaging from bigger cases, but too much work, The Vickers 50 would be perfect.ed

Pollard's :History of Firearms" speaks of the 55 Boys as being derived from a sporting cartridge without going into much detail. I am no expert and have no idea what they based it on or what they did, but this information comes from one of the most authoritative manuals on British firearms history produced in recent decades.

Perhaps, if someone is a member of the Arms and Armour Society in the UK, they would be able to get more information about this round, it's history and details of whatever sporting use the original that it was based on saw, if any.

Al,
Thanks for the measurements. The 50 Vickers is considerably bigger than the .505 Gibbs.

Mehul,
The 55 Boys does slightly resemble a scaled up .375 H&H. thumb
