DRG standart Mauser in 460 A-Square short
In a German hunting magazin I found an article about a gunsmith chambering a standart Mauser 98
to 460 A-Square short.
I think it might be a good idea, do you have ever heart of such a project, and what do you think about it?

Burkhard,

You can find out more in A-Square's reloading manual entitled "Any Shot You want" which can be purchased at a slight discount through http://www.alibris.com. Basically the round is a 460 Weatherby shortened to 2.5 inches of case length pushing a 500 grain bullet at 2420 fps. There is also a 495 A-Square which is the same case necked to .510" and pushing a 570 grain bullet at 2420 fps.

The problem with these rounds is that a Mauser needs extensive modification and a new magazine box to feed these cartridges. Also, if the Mauser is not of recent production, pressures may be too high and can cause lug setback.

Clarification: the .495 A-Square is 2.800" in case length, not 2.500"

The .45 Lapua (.458 Nyati) thumb is a much nicer cartridge than the .460 Short A-Square.

The case length of the .45 Lapua is 2.666", so overall COL can be short loaded to about 3.500", or you can throat it for long loads to COL of 3.750".
