Cherry stocks on big bores
I saw a custom rifle in 375 H&H the other day that had a beautiful stock made of cherry with incredible crotch figure. Have any of you ever ran across a cherry stock? Could you share pics?

It seems cherry would make a great stock. It isnt brittle, has very tight grain, machines very well, and is fairly heavy and dense. What are your opinions?

I tried to find a vendor that had nice cherry for a stock and found precious few who had any. There seems to be little demand so no one thinks of stockwood when sawing up cherry
logs.
The other problem relayed was the scarcity of really nicely figured cherry. That rifle is a scarce beauty.

try Tiger Hunt @ gunstockwood.com

He sells triger stripe maple but also has Wild Black Cherry and Ash.

I bought some 2 piece tiger maple blanks from him several years ago. He no longer lists cherry on his website.

Tiger Hunt was one of the places I tried, to no avail. Cherry has become a very popular furniture wood because of the resurgence in popularity of the missiom style (arts and crafts era)furniture. I think the miniscule demand for gunstock grade wood is overwhelmed by the high volume buyers for the furniture industry. When that tacky walnut burl look from the 70s comes back maybe things will change again...

Hallowell's had a Ottmar rifle stocked in cherry a few months ago. I didn't see it listed just now, but it was a really nice rifle. I can't remember what the rifle was chambered for. Was a beautiful rifle.

cherry was one of the stockmakers choices back in the 17-1800's you would see lots of old muzzloaders stocked it it. Best place is probably a wood dealer in the pennsylvania area since that seems to be where the best cherry comes from
