495 A-Square
Anyone have one of these? It seems like a cartridge with a classic shape that will give you a 600g bullet at 2150 fps with less recoil than a 505 Gibbs or 500 A-Square, doesn't have a rebated rim like the 500 Jeffery, and cases are cheaper than the Gibbs or Jeffery. It doesn't have that classic African cartridge mystique however, which does mean something in my book ...

Wink
I also would like to hear owner's comments. I know nothing about this cartridge but I hear it can also be chambered in a standard length action?

the .495 is rebated, so lets not be confused on that issue. all 460 webby brass is, comparing belt to bolt face by spec.

the 495a2 or the 505 empire can be fitted to a standard length action, but at is longer than 3.35 oal ... doing a stagger feed on a mauser with these is TOUGH

as for loadings? its fantastic if you want 600gr at 2200 or 535gr at 2300 at the near minimum for the powder charge

For your consideration
the .550 express a 3.35 oal .550, ,designed specifically to be the baddest thing to a standard langth mauser, which is belted and slightly rebated

head stamped brass available today at qualcart

the 500 AR -
a 3.35 OAL based off the 416 rigby case .. blown out, shortened, and fits rather nicely in an enfield. no belt, no rebate .. within 2 grains of the 495 A2. I have taken 600gr at 2200 or 535gr at 2300 at the minimum for the powder charge.

headstamped brass will be available this summer

pacnor has my reamer and gages

It is 3.35, fits in standard length actions, though I wouldn't do it on a milsurp mauser, as it is still going to be high bolt thrust.

Hi Jeffeosso, so can I do a staggered magazine with the .495 A-Square in my CZ 550? How many do you think it will hold?

Thanks,
Chuck

Thanks jeffeosso, what bullets do 50 cal shooters (.510 caliber) use for light loads? The only ones I saw on Midway were 450g Woodleigh Weldcores (a nice bullet but pricey for practice) and some really light weight Rainer bullets (335g).

Chuck,
I don't know most other 50 shooters Smiler but most guys I know use 535 or 600gr gaschecked hard casts for playing, plinking, and hog hunting.

frankly, I think the 535gr or 600gr PP from woodliegh is just about the perfect bullet for these
