I've been working on my 505 Gibbs and probably have 50 hrs in it so far. It's finally at the sanding stage and this picture was taken following completion of the inletting of the stock and glass bedding. It's now sanded to 120 grit and will go to 400. The action is a Vektor from SA with slots for Talley rings machined into the square bridges. The barrel was made by Butch Searcy. The entire barrel was CNC machined by Butch from one piece of Pac-Nor steel probablt about 2.5 inch diameter and contains an integral quarter rib, open sight base, barrel band and a humungous second recoil lug. The stock is an absolutely beautiful piece of walnut with tons of figure in it. Following final sanding, I'm going to checker the gun and Hot Blue it, then take it for a test drive. As per 470 MBOGO, I've added a Pachmeyer triple X recoil pad and some crossbolts. The grip cap and rear carrying strap swivel are from Dakota. The screws on this gun were machined from 4140 and slotted to fit exactly. In playing with the stock, I've added a left hand cheekpiece with shadow line and scallops just touching the rear crossbolt. It's definately getting there.

Robgunbulder,

Interesting looking rifle. The stock looks mighty beefy in the forearm area. Is that really a 505?

How about you show us a picture of the muzzle with a 505 Gibbs bullet started into the muzzle.

Something just doesn't look right with the gun. The barrel is too thin or the stock is too bulky.

By the way, why did you put the cross bolt through the pistol grip? I am thinking it is because this isn't a Vektor action, but a Ruger M77 MkII Magnum! The Ruger is the only magnum length action I know of that will not allow the installation of a cross bolt between the magazine mortise and the trigger group.

Besides, you don't have the money for a $2500 action and a $1600 barrel!

Look closely at that action gentlemen. That is a Ruger M77 MkII Magnum 416 Rigby with a new barrel band front sight which Rob is restocking! The grain layout is not very good for a big gun either. I could be wrong, the picture is pretty low quality. Besides, it is a slab cut blank. It sure as hell isn't quarter sawn!

Robgunbuilder, you have been EXPOSED!

I was wondering if you chose the white line triple mag pad over the black line so it'll work in with the color of your wood.

TEG,

Hopefully for your own sake someone will seek institutional help for you. If you are already in an institution, then ask a family member to get you transferred to another one. And remember that Todd E, Axel and so on are not your family members, they are just part of your your imagination.

Thanks for the nice comments guys. The stock has beautiful figure in it and the picture just doesn't do it justice. I took some additional photos to screw with TOADE's brain a little. HEY-TOADE- I knew you'd ask so here is a bullet in the muzzel and a micrometer showing it's a .505. CAN YOU READ THIS-TOADE? THIS IS NOT A CZ - TOADE- NOTICE THE MAUSER LIKE BOLT( Just a tad longer than a M98 and without a classy wby shroud (EKK) and other subtle features that make this a VEKTOR. YES TOADE the action does cost $2500. Thats about 1200 hrs with your sister and no I won't trade the gun for her. Thanks for offering though!!-Rob

Robgunbuilder,

From your posting:

THIS IS NOT A CZ - TOADE- NOTICE THE MAUSER LIKE BOLT

TEG does not know what a Mauser bolt looks like as he has never seen a rifle [Big Grin] He is actually quite closing to a complete break down. Lucky for his neighbours that he does not own a gun. But I guess even if he owned a gun he would not know how to load and fire it.

By the way, nice gun and the 505 is just the caliber.

Rob - Awesomely beautiful rifle. PLEASE show us the finished product. Where did you find such wood for your stock? I didn't know that kind of figure in wood was left.

Only TEGGY would be stupid enough to try and find any fault with this rifle. But I know you expected this. This dipshit isn't hard to figure out. Hahahaha.

Great work Rob. [Smile]

PS - What is the barrel length? Looks like about 20 or 22 but could be just the perspective.

I'd give a $100 to see the look on TOADE's face when he saw those Muzzel and Action pictures. I can hear the sound of his Pathetic EGO deflating like a busted Baloon! Sorry TOADE I'm just trying to push you over the edge agin! I really liked your last "meltdown" so much I want to hear those famous words of yours again. Toade- repeat after me slowly now! I TOADE am a total LOSER! I will now kill my TEG identity and seek a MENTAL HEALTH Professional!

Pecos45/JAG- Thanks for the nice words. The barrel is 23 inches of pac-Nor's finest. I've got to do alot more sanding and I'll take some more pictures of the action with the stock off tomorrow. I didn't want to show everything at once as I was setting TOADE up. He took the bait again, I can't believe it! I have a few more good ones left. I'll take some specifically of the quarter rib. -Rob

Rob,

If a clean desk is a sign of a sick mind, then you must be the sanest man alive! [Smile]

Love that workshop. The taped up digital micrometer is the best! [Smile] Is that red colored 'scotchbrite' with the q-tip sitting on it? Do you use that on the wood, or the metal? I'm familiar with the white, green, and grey colored scotchbrite. I'm assuming the red is coarser than green, but not as coarse as the grey?

Oh, the rifle is outstanding looking! The wood looks very well inleted to my very amatuer eye. I'm going to admit ignorance on the Vector action, but it sure looks nice. What makes it so expensive? Is it a rarer version of an older Mauser clone, or a newly produced action?

Thanks!

BW- You got me there. My motto is a sterile bench is a sterile mind! That's my welding( can you see the TIG torch above the .50 barrel stub?)/measuring/general messing around bench and yes the tape on the micrometer is for real . I lost the battery cover and just taped-it on. Happened yesterday and I'm still looking for it! Yes the scotch brite pad is important in general gunsmithing. I use it to get the nitrocellulose off the barrel after I've glass bedded it. That secret will cost you! Not that the barrel doesn't have to be buffed out before blueing and all.
The inletting is OK, I put in about 15 hrs spotting that action in, but it's not perfect. There are a few places wher it has to be touched up but then again I don't work for Purdey. I'm still learning, but then again I'm still an amateur. Now TOADE- there is a man who has never done anything ( legal that is) but who knows EVERYTHING.
The VEKTOR BOSVELD action is made in SA from EN24 Conditioned T steel machined from solid barstock and hardened to 36-38 Rockwell C. The bolt is made from EN36 steel but hardened to34-36 Rockwell C( outside to 55 Rockwell C) for slickness and wearability. The receiver is an almost identical copy of the Oberndorf double square bridge Magnum Mauser action with a few improvements which includes a longer receiver ring to allow for more barrel/thread engagement area and the recoil lug has been shifted foreward for improved bedding and recoil force distribution. I originally got this in order to build a 505 Gibbs RGB IMPROVED, but deceided to first try the std 505 Gibbs for reasons of interest and nostalgia. I'll hot rod this thing later on. Hey- TOADE Wanna calculate the action strength or you still think this is a CZ550? I'll bet he's trying to read up on this on Butch's website as we speak. By tomorrow TOADE will tell us everything we need to know about the VEKTOR!!! [Wink] [Wink] [Wink] -Rob

Fantastic work! Great job on the rifle and the POSeur. Of course it is a lot easier to spank a troll than to turn out the level of artistry that you are doing with that 505.

How much will it weigh, unloaded, with express sights?

Rob - I dreamed about this rifle last night. In my dream you finished it, took it to the range and the best group you could shoot was 5 rds in 3/4" at 100 yds. You were so disgusted that you gave the rifle to me, scope and all, and made me promise to get it out of your sight forever.

Which I gladly promised. [Big Grin]

Hey- Guys- What happened to TOADE? He has not returned for another lesson yet! Probably still trying to find a Vektor website to quote. I wanted him to hear more about how I turned a $500 CZ550 into a $2500 Vektor. At least thats going in the right direction. TOADE/Axel turned a $1000 Winchester pre-war M70 into a $500 CZ550 with their extensive knowledge of machining and metalurgy.

Rob,thanks for posting the pics, love to look at custom guns in the making, and being I 'm left handed, its just one more nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned on having to have a big bore made up on the easier to obtain right hand action.
I know nothing of custom smithing,I'm just an armouer for SIG's in my dept. But you and the others who know more and actually build those fine rifles do yourselfs a favor and don't lower to what's his names level,as one of the X-wifes used to tell me{she is a teacher} Stupidty is in the Genes. In his case he should follow the old rule,"Its better to be thought a fool, than open ones mouth and prove it" [Wink]

Robgunbuilder,

That is a Vektor, I stand corrected. By the way, I did not say it was a CZ550, but a Ruger M77 MkII Magnum! You really need to slow down and read peoples posts before you blow a head gasket.

In your original picture my comment was viable. If you want action strength calculations I can do them for you. I need all the action dimensions though. Send me a private message to discuss details.

Nice looking rifle, although my personal tastes required a slimmer less cumbersome forearm. That is a Great American Rifle Stocks, stock isn't it.

Looks like midgrade California english too. Mid grade being AA or XX. Post a picture of the barreled action out of the stock so I can see why you placed the rear cross bolt in that worseless position, please? You do realize that a cross bolt behind the action does NOTHING structurally don't you?
